You have been economically brainwashed into NOT believing an inconvenient truth, trade deficits are a disaster, or plain stupid.

You have a trade deficit with the grocery store. You buy stuff from them but they don't buy anything from you. Are they stealing from you? Would you be better off not trading with them?
But you have a trade surplus with your employer. They buy your services but you don't buy theirs. Are you stealing from them?
A trade deficit is not a loss. It simply means we're getting more stuff from one country than they get from us. It's perfectly normal and reasonable to have trade deficits with some countries and trade surpluses with others, as we do. It's a good thing.
This railing against trade deficits is economic ignorance.
