It just went from bad to worse for Nike.
The iconic sports equipment brand took a big risk by employing Colin Kaepernick for its new ad campaign. And its not just because Kaepernick who hasnt seen any professional action in over a year insulted the American flag with his protest against police brutality. Its also because the tagline of the campaign (Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.) is a direct insult to those who have served their country, and have given everything for it. This morning we reported that Nikes stock price took a hit shortly after the ad campaign launched. (RELATED: Nike Stock Goes Turbulent as Fans Boycott Brand After Kaepernick Promotion Announcement.) But now were learning that the repercussions of using Kaepernick to sell sweatshop-made sneakers are even worse.
The Wrap reports that Nike just lost billions in its market cap evaluation:
Nike just lost about $3.75 billion in market cap after announcing Colin Kaepernick as the new face of its Just Do It ad campaign. Its the 30th anniversary of the iconic TV and print spots. At the time of this writing, the sneaker companys intra-day market capitalization was $127.82 billion. On Friday, that number had been $131.57 billion.

Now, theres a chance this drop is temporary. Nike could weather this storm after the controversy.
But, then again, the NFL never did recover in ticket sales since the take the knee protest wore on throughout last years season. (RELATED: NFL Sunday Night Football Ratings Down After National Anthem Protests.) People remember their loyalties. And many in this country remain loyal to America and her flag, despite their own personal opinions toward football.
They’ll make it up after the ferals start stealing more Nike shoes because they love Kaepernick. After all, theft serves as a substitute for an economy in the Third-world.
If his QB skills were better he would be playing in the NFL.
His parents, whose wealth he will be inheriting, are also pretty well off.
No right thinking Americacan should ever buy any product from Nike again. There are far better and cheaper replacements for every overpriced product they sell.
Even for NIKE, 3.8 Billion is a lot of money.
Right now, the advertising group is frantically telling there boss; “Don’t worry, it will blow over in a few days. All those angry Deplorables? They’ll be back!”
And that’s just a start.
Losers stick together
Corporate virtue signaling can be a dangerous thing. Great to see this, may it continue.
My mother bought Nike stock every year for her grandchildrens Christmas gifts. Im sure she has been looking for a new stock choice today. Very stupid unnecessary business move.
kaepernick is a second rate quarterback with first rate physical abilities. It’s his brain that’s the problem....
After a year or two of beating most of the league with his feet and the run option he fell flat when opposing defensive coordinators figured him out.
the 49’ersspent mega dollars trying to teach him to stand in the pocket. He just can’t do it. His head doesn’t allow him work through the progressions. As a pocket passer Kaepernick spends most of his time sacked and flat on his back. In short he is a one trick pony that everyone knows the solution to.
When there are plenty of other brand choices for the type of products you make, it’s pure stupidity to alienate even 1/10th of your potential buyers; except in this case, you are alienating and insulting a lot more than “just” 50% of your potential customers.
Me? Don’t need Nike, and in actuality, for the price of a pair of Nike shoes, I could buy 3 or 4 or the cheaper brands. Bye, Nike. Pleasant not doing business with you anymore. And, btw, neither are my family members and a bunch of my friends. You don’t need us, apparently, but we need you less.
His parents, whose wealth he will be inheriting, are also pretty well off.”””
IF I were that parent, I would have totally re-written the will a couple of years go.
That punk doesn’t deserve to inherit anything.
He has totally disrespected his upbringing.
Being ‘wealthy’ in Chico, Calif., isn’t like being wealthy in Newport Beach.
Putting your money where your mouth is.
That’s gonna be a plenty big mouth.
And it will all be digested and passed on through.
Maybe when the market cap loses some 20% of its current value, the board will sit up and take notice.
Colin Kaepernick will NEVER be a quarterback again.
Updated Nike slogan
Just Doh it !!
JUST SCREW IT!
Things that can permanently burn a brand name for very large market segments ought generally to be avoided in publicly-held companies.
Wonder if whoever OK’d this marketing campaign was secretly all-in massively leveraged into a short position beforehand. Would make more sense as a scam than played straight, for sure.
