Shares of Nike Inc fell 3 percent on Tuesday as calls for a boycott of the sportswear giant gained traction on social media following its choice of Colin Kaepernick as a face for the 30th anniversary of its "Just Do It" slogan.
Former San Francisco quarterback Kaepernick, the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem as a protest against racism, posted a black-and-white close-up of himself on Instagram on Monday featuring the Nike logo and "Just do it" slogan, along with the quote: "Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything."
Over 30,000 people were tweeting with the hashtag #NikeBoycott on Tuesday morning U.S. eastern time, making it among the top trending topics on Twitter.

Back in the day
Nike backed Tanja Harding
Is the sarcasm tag really needed?
Thinking??? The liberal "brain" combined with the predominant cloud of smoke from abundant "ganja" means that "thinking" is not required.
Not just Nike. Their largest shareholders are right in there with them.
Sold my Nike stock just after market opened. I lost about 2% but I am not waiting for the 25% to 30% loss coming soon.
Believe in something. Even it if it means sacrificing everything.
Looks like Goodwill is going to get my Nike golf shoes. I’m just not the burning type.
When I went to Twitter and looked yesterday, I saw more tweets about people now choosing to buy Nike because they loved the ad. So glad to see this from lefty Yahoo.
I get confused about America sometimes. I really would like to see what BLM and these kneeling football players have wrought. What good has come of these protests? Anything?
Some Madison Ave advertising company is in deep doo doo.
At least Nike can be the official sponsor of antifa.
What demographic were they trying to pull in by embracing him that they didnt already have?
This was a brilliant move by Nike, in terms of free ad revenue.
The reaction by the right to get this trending was the point.
The fact that social media influencers are guiding and leading this outrage cycle, was also expected. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cernovich’s of the internet are also waiting for a nice temporary stock drop to buy.
don’t be naive on this sort of stuff
That is what would infuriate me as a stockholder...there weren't trying to pull in another demographic.
They were simply virtue signalling. The WORST kind of Virtue Signalling...CORPORATE virtue signalling.
IMO, if you want to virtue signal on your own, with your own money and reputation on the line, go for it. Be stupid. Do all you want, the more the better, actually.
But when it is NOT your money, and your stupid virtue signalling affects others, you should be fired.
Let's say you are a famous conservative athlete and you use their products. You are going to change if you can, and you might actually intrinsically like the product, the way it feels, you are used to it. Or you own stock. You probably want to sell.
These people suck and should be punished by the market.
Look at what happened to "The Red Hen" (and the entire town)
3% down - 97% to go.
Beyond stupid...
It is not the picture but the idiotic platitude that I find offensive. It would seem to fit Hitler rather well....he believed in something even though it cost him everything.
Either way, I haven’t purchased anything Nike since 1976.
3% is not a big deal. They’re slave laborers. I don’t know why anybody buys their cheap ass shoes.
Bwahahaha.. Perfect! Best response of the day so far.
