McCain: Brought people together, brought respect (labor day laughs!)

Last week I wrote about John McCain and received emails after the column appeared. One of them asked me why I did not talk about the Keating – John McCain was one of the five sitting Senators who was part of the Keating Five. This took place in 1989. According to Wikipedia, “Senators Glenn and McCain were cleared of having acted improperly but were criticized for having exercised ‘poor judgment.'”

When I was in Iraq in 2003, after going to the house where Saddam Hussein kept women, one employee of the Ministry of Culture said to me, “Nobody perfect.” That can certainly be said of John McCain.

We heard that because of John McCain’s family background, he became a pilot – even though his qualifications to become a pilot were suspect. You can say what you want about then-pilot McCain being held in the Hanoi Hilton (the name given to the POW prison where he was held), but he refused to leave once they discovered who his father and grandfather were. He was not perfect, but he behaved like a hero.

Why did Senator McCain get the accolades this week? Why, of all the people who have laid in state (31 people, including Senator McCain), did McCain get that honor? It is because of what he stood for … and why the country needs Senator McCain’s view point right now.

President Trump has been tweeting constantly. His tweets are often divisive. For example: “The Fake News Media is going CRAZY! They are totally unhinged and in many ways, after witnessing first hand the damage they do to so many innocent and decent people, I enjoy watching. In 7 years, when I am no longer in office, their ratings will dry up and they will be gone!”

“”but he refused to leave once they discovered who his father and grandfather were.””

Still waiting for an eye witness to that offer...guess it will never be forthcoming at this date as I suspect it was all in his head. He had the need to make himself look more important than he really was from early days.. We’ve seen tons of egotists and narcissists in our time but he had to be number one.

Can anyone tell me or does anyone know who paid for the elaborate funerals? Probably the festivities at the US Capitol were taxpayer funded and I understand the government airplane Air Force Two was loaned by the courtesy of President Trump but how about the return trip to AZ for all the people who got to DC on the (OUR) government plane? I hope all the expenses involved in AZ were at the family’s expense. I wonder if there are burial benefits available for US Senators OR Representatives. I’ve looked it up and it doesn’t appear to be among the benefits...

Senators Glenn and McCain were cleared of having acted improperly but were criticized for having exercised ‘poor judgment.

So two were very qualified military pilots, and whatever you think about McCain, remember he did land aircraft on a carrier, repeatedly, without killing himself, which is generally regarded as the highest stress aircraft maneuver one can perform.

Such men cannot be excused for exercising poor judgment. They should have been condemned for it.

The proper word here is derisive, not divisive. Attacking #fakenews is not attacking a segment of the voting public. It is attacking editorialists who hardly have the right to complain about derisive speech by one who they so constantly and frequently deride.

It's called getting your due, snowflake.

I was set to reply “huh?” until it dawned on me you’re saying the same benefit from SS that any of us get on death? I doubt that....if what you say is true then the family is paying all expenses related to the services both in AZ and DC?

Those SUV’s didn’t come cheap. I counted 10 at Andrews when Air Force Two arrived from AZ and a huge bus pulled up on the other side of the field to take passengers off a commercial jet at the same time. That was supposed to be staff members and members of Congress (who apparently were in AZ for that service). There were a lot of people on that bus who joined others already lined up waiting for the casket to be taken off the plane. The SUV’s were used for the trip to the Capitol that day and again on the way to the Cathedral the next day and no doubt away from the Cathedral - all the way to MD?

Somehow I don’t see any members of the “elite” paying the expenses for their own funerals when staged the way this one was. Call me nuts but I’m curious how much was paid by US, the taxpayer...Curious and furious if it’s our money!
