As Paul noted last night, Democrats (and some Republicans) turned John McCains funeral into an orgy of Trump-bashing. Evidently they thought it made political sense. It reminds me of another politicized funeral, 16 years ago.
In the fall of 2002, Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone was running for re-election against Norm Coleman. Tim Pawlenty was running his first race for Governor. And, of course, it was the first midterm election of George W. Bushs presidency. In the last days of the campaign, Wellstones campaign airplane crashed in northern Minnesota, killing Wellstone and a number of others. Former Vice-President Walter Mondale was hurriedly recruited to replace Wellstone on the ticket.
And leading Democrats from around the country assembled in the Twin Cities for Wellstones funeral. The funeral was broadcast live to the nation. To the shock of most who watched, the Democrats turned Wellstones funeral into a partisan hate-fest. Reaction was overwhelmingly negative.
Coleman went on to defeat Mondale handily. Pawlenty won his first term. And nationally, Republicans gained seats in both the House and the Senate. Revulsion against the Democrats politicized funeral was widely credited as a factor in Republicans success.
Will the politicizing of McCains funeral by anti-Trumpers have a similar boomerang effect? Probably not to the same degree; standards have declined considerably since 2002. But it wont help the anti-Trumpers cause, just as similar anti-Trump speeches at Aretha Franklins funeral wont be helpful.
What can we conclude if there is a funeral for Person A, and the eulogies are mostly about Person B? For one thing, Person B is obviously a heck of a lot more important than Person A. John McCain was heroic in some ways, notoriously small-minded in others. It is perhaps a fitting coda to his career that his funeral was mostly about someone else.

Democrats are good at it!
I can’t stop thinking about the how these funerals compare and are similar to the Wellstone memorial and there are 2 at the same time....
Ready for this crap to be over.
They are not good for or at anything except race/class warfare and outright hatred for the opposition.
This sentence sums up the whole affair.
It is perhaps a fitting coda to his career that his funeral was mostly about someone else.

They’re good at showing their true, ugly colors and they’ve been doing a lot of that.
The BIG difference is the Rats are not getting the blame for the funeral being politicized. All hear are the family and other Republicans. There will be no negative fallout.
It there weren’t double standards, Democrats would have no standards at all.
When I die, I want to go out quietly.
I don’t care who shows up.
There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell, that I’ll be trying to make points with family members, acquaintances, or ex wives.
My bills will be paid.
I won’t have any animals.
My home will be liquidated.
I won’t hold grudges against other people. Jane Fonda won’t be on my mind. Bill and Hillary Clinton won’t.
You know, you’ve got to let go in the end.
Perhaps you’ve tried to live a decent life and failed. In the end you can at least exit with some class.
This John S. McCain sendoff is about as far from my ideal as it could get. In the end he was eaten up with jealousy, hatred, and vindictiveness.
You know John, you’re an easy man to hate.
Right now all I feel is pity for you.
So many people had to take a stand in public and lie for you. It’s embarrassing.
I will have offended people in my lifetime, but in most instances they were offending me too.
It’s the end. Let go.
Folks, try not to die like John McCain did.
You’ll make yourself and all those around you miserable.
If you do it as badly as McCain did, people will just shake their head.
Shaking my head...
And the “somebody else” was living in their otherwise vacant minds virtually rent-free.
Can’t get better name recognition than never having to say it out loud.
So many projected their own seriously pathetic behavior on the guy who was disinvited months before the egomaniac died. Is this really their “A” game?
Is he planted yet? I couldn’t watch any more of the coverage, it was sickening.
Mondale looks like a younger George Soros.
Well said!
Exactly right!
Both the Wellstone and McCain funerals are strikingly similar to two others:
the Soviet State Funeral of Josef Stalin.
The North Korean State Funeral of Kim Jong Il
Someone alluded to that.
I’ll take their word.
Thank heaven I don’t have cable. It was hard enough to avoid as it was.
Thanks.
