Sen. John McCain's family has gathered on a tarmac as military members took his flag-draped casket from a hearse to a plane that will take him from Arizona to Washington, D.C.
An Air Force plane that says "United States of America" will carry McCain and his family to the nation's capital Thursday.
It follows a memorial service in Phoenix attended by 3,500 people where former Vice President Joe Biden spoke.
There will be a public viewing Friday at the U.S. Capitol and a service Saturday at Washington National Cathedral. He will be buried Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

TYRANT Augusto Pinochet lies in his coffin moments before being cremated yesterday - leaving Chile as divided in death as he did in life.
Around 60,000 mourners gave the former dictator and friend of Margaret Thatcher a tearful send-off at his military funeral in Santiago.
But critics and relatives of the 3,000 people who were killed or disappeared during his brutal 17-year rule were still angry that his death on Sunday from a heart attack robbed them of seeing him face justice.
The government denied the 91-year-old a state funeral - a move that infuriated supporters who insist he saved Chile from communism.
And Pinochet's eldest daughter Lucia said her father lit a "flame of freedom" when he overthrew Salvador Allende's socialist government in a 1973 coup.
Church leaders called on Chileans to take his death as an opportunity for national reconciliation.
But relatives of Pinochet's victims were left echoing the words of Hilaire Belloc's poem Epitaph on the Politician Himself.
He wrote for a dignitary's funeral: "I wept: for I had longed to see him hanged."

McCain bunch, obama, bush, and clintons (hillary ?), members of senate & house speakers (deep swamp dwellers) all members of One World Government. All took a nip at our President Trump. While nipping at President Trump, they were really telling Americans, who back our President, we’re not worthy either. So to show them how strong they aren’t we MUST ALL show up on November 6th and vote RED for Republicans.
McCain should be cremated,entombed and buried. Take no chances!
I don’t enjoy speaking bad against people who die. It is generally in poor taste.
But I do enjoy people who speak the truth.
It never happens on TV.
