McCain’s memorial remembrances were filled with themes of unity, inclusion, and compromise. They stressed how McCain was someone who could reach across the aisle, find consensus, and put differences aside to bring people together for the greater good.
It’s too bad McCain’s final actions contradicted that message...
Senator McCain had a perfect opportunity to be the “maverick” of his reputation. He could have been the unifier. He could have done the right thing by allowing even those he had unresolved issues with, differences with, to come and pay their respects and to honor him. He could have shown the country, not just in words but in action, that no matter how great the differences we have with one another, we can move beyond them, beyond the anger, bitterness, pain, even our own pride and ego, to come together to do what is best for America.
John McCain could have done all these noble things. But he didn't.

“This funeral is going to last all day.”
I will give credit to McCain for his patriotism and sacrifice, though I intensely disagree with much of his politics and the vindictive treatment of Trump and Palin. But his self planned funeral is so over the top it should never be allowed to be repeated.
Kennedy was assassinated on Friday, November 22, and his services were complete after a State funeral with him buried on Monday, November 25. Three days. Plenty of time for a nation and the world to pay their respects.
Reagan had a State funeral, he died on June 5, 2004 and was buried June 11, 2004 - after initial services in California, then DC, and back to California.
Here we have a failed Presidential candidate having a funeral that is taking longer than either of these actual presidents. McCain died on August 25. He won’t be buried until tomorrow, September 2. All because he planned it that way.
I remember when Nancy Reagan said her final farewell - how hard it was for her to leave his casket. I can’t imagine what it will be like for McCain’s family tomorrow. There needs to be some time for grief, but this is just way too long.
That may be true for some, but McCain celebrated his family history, with multi-generational naval heroes, and those ancestors fighting in the Civil War for the Confederacy. There were published accounts that discussed all these topics.
In an era when those praising McCain now, are the first to rip down Confederate statues, I find it ironic that they now keep a complicit silence.
I think Palin wasn’t invited to either be there or make a speech because she’d attract too much attention. Or they feared it would relaunch her national political career.
A eulogy from her would have been been great. No one would have slept through it.
By the way, I though Bush’s eulogy was very good.
I realize the New York Post has gone slightly more anti-Trump over the past months, but this is a little much.
The media, as well as the McCain family, in their shameful, obvious and despicable effort solely to denigrate President Trump by “elevating” McCain to “greatness” he never deserved, have guaranteed a lasting, deep and very special loathing, not of the President, but of John McCain.
Into the future, whenever I hear the contemptible words, “John McCain”, I will feel a very special need to spit. For God’s sake why couldn’t they have just left it alone? Hatred for Trump has truly driven them past the point of rationality. Where is the line of insanity?
I suspect Ivanka showed up thinking it may dilute some of the savagery shown against her Dad, our President. I hope Ivanka takes comfort from the fact that the remarks made just reflected badly on McCain and family. What a dog and pony show that funeral is. I’ve been switching channels for days...when will it end???

Yes, those men died in that terrible Tragedy, but McCain had nothing to do with it.
I dislike McCain for a myriad of reasons, but the insistence that he had anything to do with the Forrestal Tragedy is not based on facts.
There are plenty of things that he did that showed his true character, but he strapped himself inside a Warplane and served his Country when there are plenty of People who couldn’t or wouldn’t do the same.
The truth about John McCain is that he betrayed his own constituents and the Republican Party when he was the one vote we needed to completely banish Obamacare forever, as he proudly stood up and gave it the thumbs down, voting with the Democrats.
The truth about John McCain is he was colluding with Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election. McCain admitted he went to Nova Scotia to meet with British spy Christopher Steele to pick up the bogus Trump-Russia dossier, and then the Arizona Senator took the fake report straight to disgraced fired FBI Director James Comey.
He even admitted he was the one to promote and pass on the salacious lies against Trump, hoping to get Hillary Clinton elected. McCain wrote,“He told me he knew a former MI6 officer by the name of Christopher Steele, who had been commissioned to investigate connections between the Trump campaign and Russian agents as well as potentially compromising information about the President-elect that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin allegedly possessed.”
On May 22, 2018, after the Trump-Russia dossier was outed as a bought and paid for smear campaign by Hillary and her cabal, McCain defended his actions, saying, “Anyone who doesn’t like it can go to hell,” McCain said, adding that he would “do it again.”

One of his pallbearers is actually a former Russian dissident who appreciated McCain’s hardline stance against Putin. I seriously doubt that this individual voted for 0.
Unfortunately, he’s being buried at the Naval Academy.
That name made me think of “Mr. Tweedly, the studio censor in Stan Freberg’s “Old Man River” satire.
If you read my posts, you will see that I said there are many men who died in Nam and because of their serving in Nam who are probably more worthy than McCain for hero status.
I believe McCain was and is a jerk up through his death. To use his death to slam President Trump, IMO, won’t gain any favor with God when his judgment comes.

there are many men who died in Nam and because of their serving in Nam who are probably more worthy than McCain for hero status.
I would add that there are other Senators more worthy than McCain to have the Senate Office Building named after them.
I sent the folowing message to Senator McConnell:
Dear Senator McConnell:
I agree with your proposal to form a bipartisan panel to determine a fitting tribute to Senator McCain.
While it would probably be a good idea to change the name of the Senate Office building, I believe that there are others who are equally worthy or even more worthy to be honored with having the building named after them.
One person I have in mind is Senator Robert Dole. He and Senator McCain both sustained war injuries while serving in the military for our country that affected them for the rest of their lives. They both served over 35 years in Congress, they both chaired Senate committees, and they both ran for President for the Republican Party. They both had a reputation of reaching across the aisle to work with the Democratic Party, although Senator Dole did so without alienating members of his own party.
Beyond this, Senator Dole chaired the Republican National Committee and served as both Senate Majority Leader and Senate Minority Leader. In addition, Senator Dole’s wife, Elizabeth, was herself a Senator and Chaired the National Republican Senatorial Committee, as well as serving in many high offices in the Executive Branch.
I realize that I am not telling you anything you don’t already know. But in comparing their records, not to mention their personalities, I believe that Bob Dole is more worthy to have the Senate Office Building named after him than John McCain is. Or even better, maybe the Robert and Elizabeth Dole Senate Office Building.
