Alexander Timofeev, another rebel leader, was seriously injured, said a statement released by the separatists.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a statement, called Zakharchenko a patriot and his death a "vile murder" intended to destabilize the region.

A top Russian law enforcement body, the Investigative Body, said it had opened a criminal investigation of the killing as a suspected act of international terrorism. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova blamed Zakharchenko's death on the Ukrainian government.

The Ukrainian government declined comment.

Ukraine has accused Moscow of being behind a string of assassinations on Ukrainian soil.

I think it is most likely interfactional fighting by the separatists. Could be sabotage from the Kyiv government but that doesn’t sound as likely to me. Some articles point out, there have been 9-10 other top separatist leaders killed in the past as well.

Occam’s razor.

The party with the most motive is most likely to have done it.

But all is fair in civil war.

In 2015 Alexander Zakharchenko, leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, claimed that Kiev’s pro-Western leaders were “miserable representatives of the great Jewish people”.

“I can’t remember a time when Cossacks were led by people who have never held a sword in their hands,” Zakharchenko told a press conference in the eastern rebel stronghold of Donetsk, in a reference to Ukraine’s nationalist forebears, the Cossacks.

Probably time for Moscow to PUT AN END to this crap and simply go in there, divide up Ukraine, and call it a done deal, just as we did with Kosovo.

Let ‘em try, just like your beloved Russians were partners with the Nazis in World War II.

Hey Russia, give up Chechnya and those areas too.

Maybe those who love the Russians who we are sanctioning should go back to the DU.

Russia’s a dying country that has attacked a Christian country in Ukraine. Russia’s future is Islam, don’t spread it around.

I’m with you, dude. If we can go running around TEARING UP countries that have been intact longer than we’ve existed, why can’t Russia do the same!

Russia already divided up Ukraine. How many more times do you want them to do it?

Wherever the standard of freedom and Independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will her [America’s] heart, her benedictions and her prayers be. But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.—John Adams

It’s not our fight.

Anybody who thinks Ukrainian nationalists are our friends or the friends of freedom is out of his mind. They’re nuts. And people in the US government who were cultivating them and supporting them were also nuts and doing it for reason of domestic politics.

We shouldn’t get involved in what has been a many-centuries long conflict that will never be resolved until the Ukrainians get rational and make rational demands and the Russians respect them. But irrationality is one of the bases of the Slavic personality.
