Trump blocks pay raise for 1.5 million federal workers, calls for no increase next year

President Trump on Thursday blocked an automatic pay raise for 1.5 million federal workers, and asked Congress to pass legislation with no increase next year for employees covered by the General Schedule pay system.

“Federal agency budgets cannot sustain such increases,” Trump wrote in a Thursday letter to congressional leaders, a formality that blocks an automatic 2.1 percent raise from taking effect in January under the Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act.

"I have determined that for 2019, both across‑the‑board pay increases and locality pay increases will be set at zero," Trump wrote.

I disagree here if you have a federal job that is worth doing, it is fine to get a raise. If you have a federal job that isn’t worth doing, the job should be eliminated. Freezing pay is a weird half step, and provides political fodder for the liberal news media. Let start shutting down departments and agencies.

So they will get the very generous salaries they made this year. Tell me when they get a substantial pay cut and when all those who have nothing to do but run their private errands and those who spend the day watching porn are fired.

If the federal unions want a pay raise they are going to have to talk to President Trump... otherwise it is...

You are 100% correct. Trump should not only block their pay increases...he should lay off 50% of the useless slackers...and boy, does the Federal government have thousands of slackers. Let them get a real job where they have to be accountable for their job scopes...period!!!

Just 50%? You’re too kind, lol. I’d say more like 90% of all Federal departments and Fed employees are not needed.

Shutting down all the unconstitutional departments would be a glorious moment for patriots.

No raises where I work for years. The delusional government employees seem to think the grass is greener over here, but that has not been my observation or experience.

He should publish the cost of benefits.

I heard some ad the other day, about teachers hmming and hawing about their pay.

I recollect from the commie care release, that unions complained about the tax on “cadillac plans” which were primarily provided to union groups like teachers.

At that time those plans ran over 20k a year for a single person when, for average plans, it was 2-3k. For cadillac plans, you pretty much show up whenever you want and never pay anything out of pocket.

So the first thing I thought when I heard the teacher complaint was that they could get on an average plan and increase salary by 15k and it’d be the same impact on the employer.

The leave policies are pretty extraordinary for gov employees too. I used to contract as a sole proprietor and the most expensive “benefit” I had to provide myself was time off, and that was just 10 gov holidays plus 3 weeks (25 days total out of a 260 possible working days or 52 5-day weeks).

So even my modest leave was about 10% of my “pay”.

Would you like to list the jobs/dept/agencies *worth* doing?

Looking into my (surely, outdated) copy of the Constitution, I can give you a VASTLY short list that are authorized...doesn’t mean they’re still worth paying, let alone doing the job well.
