Pope Francis deleted a tweet Thursday saying “We Christians are not selling a product. We are communicating a lifestyle,” after criticism from Twitter users.

The pontiff later replaced the tweet with a similarly worded message, saying instead that Christians communicate “life.” Twitter users lambasted the original tweet, saying that the church’s recent actions and the language of Francis’ message sounded exactly like a sales pitch.

We're preaching the Gospel. We're worshiping the Lord Jesus Christ. We're living our Faith. And when we fail in these things, we confess our sins and ask Our Lord for the grace to do better.

I’m afraid that Frankie’s selection as first pope from the “new world” has poisoned the well. It will be a long time before there’s another pope from west of the Greenwich meridian.
