Dan Rather blasts 'openly racist rhetoric' from political figures
By Avery Anapol - 08/29/18 07:08 PM EDT
Longtime CBS News anchor Dan Rather on Wednesday blasted openly racist rhetoric from political figures, saying the current climate reminds him of years spent covering the civil rights movement.
Without naming any specific names or incidents, Rather, a frequent critic of President Trump, called out elected officials and candidates for their shocking rhetoric.
Openly racist rhetoric from elected officials and candidates brings me back decades to covering the civil rights movement, Rather tweeted. It's shocking - a potent reminder of our troubled time. But I believe most Americans will reject hate, eager to embrace a more inclusive and just future.

Rathers comments come hours after Florida GOP gubernatorial nominee Rep. Ron DeSantis (Fla.) sparked massive backlash for his comments about the Democratic nominee, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum.
Earlier Wednesday, DeSantis told Florida voters not to monkey this up by voting for Gillum. Gillum, a progressive candidate backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), would be the states first black governor if elected.
Critics and Democratic figures were quick to call DeSantis comment racist, with Gillums campaign manager saying it was more like a "bull horn" than a "dog whistle."

Making up more slurs, Dan?
First there was McCain, now the idiot Rather.
Can’t they
just
go
away
and
shut
up?
Rather makes up 10 things before breakfast each morning.
What a racist song.
What a racist band.
Doesn’t Desantis know that only racist anti White rhetoric is acceptable?
Just because the so called “media” says it, doesn’t make it so.
It should be impossible to seriously call any Republican politician’s remarks “racist” after LBJ’s quip regarding how many years of uninterrupted support the Democrats would have from “those n***ers” following passage (once the 60+ hours Democrat filibuster was broken) of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 became public. Dan may have missed it, being tuned to the wrong frequency and all.
It was strange to have Warren Buffett use a “monkey and dartboard” analogy to describe the business acumen of Donald Trump in Omaha with Hillary and choir-persons in attendance.
Didn’t know ‘monkey’ was racist. This election will be more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Oops, I guess I’m RACIST for saying barrel of monkeys, or is a monkey wrench racist, too?
Clever this!
May I "borrow" it?
Hey Dan, Buckhead says hi.
Ha!
Who woke the drunk up?
Sure.
Didn’t Texas disown him? Isn’t he living in a commune in San Francisco these days?
Dan Rather............ not!
