Duterte says buying US F-16 jets ‘utterly useless’

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has rejected an offer by the US defence chief and other top American officials to buy F-16 fighter jets, saying such an acquisition would be “utterly useless” because his country needs lighter combat aircraft to fight insurgents.
Duterte scoffed at the offer on Thursday, saying it had been floated in a letter by Defence Secretary James Mattis, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. The offer came after he was slammed by the US for his deadly crackdown on illegal drugs, he said.

Sell them some A-10’s!A-10s, would be like swatting mosquitos, with a sledge hammer. The muzzies don’t have tanks and artillery. I think Duterte told them, he wants attack helicopters, not fast movers. In the Marawi war, they used OV-10s, and I thought even that was a bit too much, to accomplish the mission.
The Philippine media are about as bad as the American media, so I tend to disbelieve most of what they say.

He makes a good point. My own native country is doing something similar ...getting some Air Tractors, which are slow and (really truly) ugly, but are one of the best platforms for going after insurgents trying to come over from Somalia. Their long loiter time, easy maintenance, ease of use, and ability to carry lots of ordnance is exactly what Kenya needs. Sure, we’d love to upgrade our fighter jets from the now long-in-the-tooth Northrop F-5s, but the Air Tractors (basically coverted militarized crop dusters) are what we REALLY need.
The Philippines is probably in a similar situation, especially considering their fight against Abu Sayyaf.
When Abu Sayyaf gets an air force then F-16s will be a good choice. As for China, not even F-35s would protect the Philippines from a concerted Chinese attack.

Dutert,the air power genius.He may not need F16’s to attack guerillas in the Phillipean jungles,but he is going to need them to keep the Chicoms at bay.
It’s too bad we destroyed all of our A1 Skyraiders.Those planes would be perfect for that type of battle.
