Arizona gov to wait until after McCain's burial to name successor

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) will wait until the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is buried before naming his successor.

"Out of respect for the life and legacy of Senator John McCain and his family, Governor Ducey will not be making any announcements about an appointment until after the Senator is laid to rest,” Ducey's senior adviser Daniel Ruiz II said in a statement to the Arizona Republic. "Now is a time for remembering and honoring a consequential life well lived."

McCain died Saturday at 81 after a fight with brain cancer. His death came after his family announced Friday that they would be discontinuing treatment for the longtime senator.

Ducey is tasked with appointing McCain’s successor under Arizona state law. The successor will fill McCain’s seat until 2020, when a special election will be held to finish the term through 2022. There will then be an election for a full six-year term in 2022.

The Arizona Republic listed potential appointees on Friday including Cindy McCain, McCain’s wife, and Kirm Adams, the chief of staff for Ducey.

“He was a giant. An icon. An American hero. But here at home, we are most proud to call him a fellow Arizonan," Ducey wrote in a statement after McCain's death. "Like so many of us, he was not born here, but his spirit, service and fierce independence shaped the state with which he became synonymous.”

Ducey is a Rino. Expect the same. Plus every general election is a choice between bad and worse. Just say military, military and you win.

That of course would be Kirk Adams, not Kirm Adams, and IMO a fantastic choice by the guv.

He is only 45 now but was Speaker of the AZ House of Reps and sounds like an effective conservative, having passed stricter immigration enforcement legislation as well as government union and pension reform, etc.

So he is an experienced pol and young enough to plausibly hold the seat into the future.

We can hope.

Was Ducey's nose getting longer during this announcement?

“AFTER BURIAL = AFTER PRIMARY ELECTION. There was a reason they waited until shortly before the primary election to turn off life support.”

Personally, I think he’s been gone for months but they were waiting for the right time to announce it. Since there has been so much outspoken opposition to Cindy being “gifted” a Senate seat, they waited until now to make the announcement.

Having him “die” on the same date as his buddy Teddy Kennedy (spit!)was probably decided on in advance since they were both cut from the same cloth - spoiled, privileged children of wealthy powerful families, who used their position to evade the consequences of their immature, immoral decisions.

Both used their Senate seats to enrich themselves, regardless of how many people’s lives they ruined, and both pursued policies that weakened America, at home and abroad, and both were proud of their treachery!

I know that I am not supposed to judge BUT I am called on to have discernment and to “know them by their fruits”...and in BOTH of these cases, the fruit was rotten to the core!

The only way to be sure is an oak stake through his rotten heart and cutting his head off.

McCain’s last order was that his body be cryogenically preserved, thus no burial, no replacement. /s

So when is he buried? How long will this be drawn out for?

That was my thought. Knowing McCain, the funeral will drag out for 3-4 weeks.
