Ben Sasse, Susan Collins Warn Trump About Firing Jeff Sessions

Republicans say confirming a replacement would be a problem

Republican senators grew increasingly vocal in their warnings to President Donald Trump if he fires Attorney General Jeff Sessions, including threats not to vote for a replacement.

Sen. Ben Sasse came to the floor Thursday afternoon to read into the Congressional Record the statement that Sessions, a former Alabama senator well-liked by his former colleagues, issued in response to criticism from Trump.

Sessions was highlighting the independence of the Justice Department, and Sasse, a Nebraska Republican, wanted it to be perfectly clear that he would have the attorney general’s back.

“Bizarrely, there are people in this body now talking like the attorney general will be fired, should be fired, I’m not sure how to interpret the comments of the last couple of hours,” Sasse said. “I would just like to say, as a member of the Judiciary Committee, and as a member of this body, I find it really difficult to envision any circumstance where I would vote to confirm a successor to Jeff Sessions if he is fired because he is executing his job, rather than choosing to act in a partisan hack.”

“Collins votes with the Trump Agenda 78.9% of the time.”

That’s just a number! She cannot be counted on where “abortion” and several other issues are concerned, so she’s really a zero. She would sink Cavanaugh on abortion alone. Sasse is simply someone who, like McCain hates the President and, like Collins (and Murky) is not a team player. We cannot afford to have RINOs (or Arch Conservatives for that matter either) mucking up the agenda on “their vaunted principles.” They would rather walk away empty-handed (and leave the country with sorely needed change), rather than give up pretty much anything on those things for which they are hot. Rand Paul is sorta like that, but I think at least he sees that sometimes he’s going to have to give on things to which he is philosophically wedded. In that regard, he’s more of a team player than his useless father who was a worthless noisemaker for 24 years.

“He thinks they’re idiots, and he’s right.”

Thank you! That goes a long way to explaining the irrational hatred for him.

Stupid people often hate smart people.

Your strategy would likely result in Sessions unrecusing himself, and becoming proactive, and retaking control of the DoJ, just to make sure no stone is unturned in the effort to take out President Trump. Firing Rosenstein could have the effect of forcing Sessions to show his true colors, and provide further cover to Trump, to finally fire him.

I am inclined to think, waiting until after an election with an unknown outcome, could find Trump with an even more hostile Congress to get his nominations through.

The naysayers against firing Sessions, have been warning Trump since the day Sessions recused himself. But if President Trump had fired Sessions the day after Sessions recused himself, the president could have more legitimately claimed his delegation of executive authority and agenda had been fundamentally impaired by the recusal, further claiming his desire and policy of investigating all foreign influence to undermine American elections.

It is much more complicated now than in the beginning. The election is much closer now.

However, “IF” Trump could have replaced sessions very early on, it would not have seemed so political as it seems now, and a possible replacement would have likely taken a proactive role in seeing to it, this investigation was at least carried out against both sides. In this scenario, we would still have a real political war being waged by the anti-American left, but it is much more likely we would have already had an undeniable tidal wave of illegalities being brought into the open, showing the total fraud of this partial foreign derived dossier, illegal use of our most powerful Intel and policing organizations, being used to subjugate the will of the American electorate against their will. The daily deluge of this type of information, would have greatly altered or changed the narrative we now have. And this information would be so damming, the sin of Trump firing Sessions would have been at least neutralized.

I can at least wish it had all gone down in some similar fashion anyway.

Sasse is among the biggest disappointments in recent elections. He started as the anti-McConnell and quickly became McConnell’s stooge.

Just who is President!!

Ya’ know, they think they can tell Trump what to do and not do, because they think he is way beneath them and not smart enough to be the Presdent... did they warn obama? on anything? Just the one they think needs guidance..

All this makes me so upset..can’t believe this is happening.. the falling apart of our country.. because the left is having a tantrum and wants revenge against us voters!

this is why Trump will fire Sessions after the midterms when the GOP Senate picks up a half a dozen seats, because then he won’t have to worry about a couple of traitorous assholes threatening him ...
