NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trumps former personal lawyer Michael Cohen testified on Tuesday that Trump had directed him to commit a crime by arranging payments ahead of the 2016 presidential election to silence two women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump.
Cohen, 51, made the statements as he pleaded guilty to eight criminal charges in federal court in Manhattan, including tax evasion, bank fraud and campaign finance violations.
Cohen did not name Trump in court, but his lawyer, Lanny Davis, said afterward that he was referring to the president.
Today he (Cohen) stood up and testified under oath that Donald Trump directed him to commit a crime by making payments to two women for the principal purpose of influencing an election, Davis said in a statement.
If those payments were a crime for Michael Cohen, then why wouldnt they be a crime for Donald Trump? Davis said.
The two payments were intended to silence two women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump and were made prior to the 2016 presidential election. One was for $130,000 given to adult-film star Stormy Daniels. The other for $150,000 related to former Playboy model Karen McDougal.

1# A Candidate can spend as much of their own money on their campaign as they like. 2# Paying a Women to keep quiet about a sex, is not Illegal. No Crime was committed PERIOD.
If those payments were a crime for Michael Cohen, then why wouldnt they be a crime for Donald Trump? Davis said.
To believe this idiocy, you would have to believe Cohen used his own money, without compensation from Trump., and that he spent it as a ‘Campaign Contribution’. Even if true, the act would in no way implicate Trump.
They will never get 2/3 majority in the Senate to impeach.
How is that a crime?
Men have been paying women since the days of living in caves.
(And just as a little scientific aside, we were able to trace Elizabeth Warren's DNA back to this guy. The strong facial resemblance is quite striking, don't you think?)
The Senate doesn't impeach. The Senate convicts (or doesn't).
If the (D)'s win the House this fall, they will hold impeachment hearings. 100% guaranteed. They will be in control of all the committees.
With impeachment hearings their top priority, Trump and his MAGA effort will be brought to a halt save for what little he can do via executive order. Oh, and we can all forget about any possibility of getting some real answers and convictions re: the criminal activities the doj/fbi/dnc conducted in 2016. Gone. The D's will kill those investigations yesterday. The Senate doesn't have the guts now to do any real investigation, and will have less if the House falls to the D's.
Yeah, the 2018 mid-terms are a big deal.
Based upon today's news of the CFO of the Trump Organization is getting immunity ...I am guessing there's some serious stuff coming out on Trump.... this is going to get ugly and if it all goes bad for Trump.... most on the right will go "oh well"... and the left will get back to ruining the country and covering up all their criminal activities from the past, and clearly the table for their next round of crooked behavior.
No.
To impeach, all the House needs to do is come up with a simple majority vote.
To convict in the Senate, requires a 2/3 vote in that body.
A (D) controlled House will have very little problem voting to impeach Trump.
However, even prior to getting to that point, they will hold endless impeachment hearings for months on end.
At the same time, the House brings all investigations into the spying on American citizens and the subversion attempts on President Trump to a full stop. They cancel all such investigations.
Meanwhile, the media will add the impeachment trials to their 24 by 7 non-stop negative news coverage of Trump and the Republicans.
Since Trump can not drain the swamp by himself, his mission to MAGA is effectively stopped. Again, only able to put in place executive orders...which can of course be undone by the next administration.
Wall? Forget about it. What's currently being constructed is canceled (remember, the House controls the purse strings).
And that's just scratching the surface, of the tip of the iceberg to what the (D)'s of today would do.
The net result is that by 2020, many of those (D)'s and independents that came out to vote for Trump in 2016, that helped put him over the Electoral College vote count, do not come out for a repeat. They are not strong enough supporters to vote for an impeached President.
To underestimate a Speaker Nancy Pelosi controlled House, in this day and age, would be a major mistake.
