"These beaches are doomed."
Those are the sobering words from Duke University geology professor emeritus Orrin Pilkey, who told our media partners at the News & Observer that the days are numbered for North Carolina's beaches.
"The buildings are doomed, too," he said.
Pilkey, who is also the founder and director emeritus of the Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines at Western Carolina University, has been sounding the alarm about rising sea levels for decades.
Pilkey said rising sea levels are an imminent threat to North Carolina's 18 barrier islands and to the Inner Banks, the areas just behind them.
Pilkey called spending millions to dredge sand from the bottom of the ocean and then pile it onto beaches in order to restore them, "an exercise in futility."
His advice for those who own beachfront property? Get out.
"If my parents were to ask me where to buy a house in North Carolina," Pilkey told the newspaper, "I would tell them to stick to the mainland. People living there now should be taking a long view."

It’s always been an exercise in futility. It’s called lateral beach erosion.

NC’s newest island on the Outer Banks is gone. March 12, 2018
I’ve been visiting and fishing the OBX from Nags Head to Beaufort for the past 35 years.
The only certainty is that they are constantly in motion.
A Cat 4 or heavy Nor’easter will do more damage than anything man can or has ever done.
ECU already had it’s crowd of loonies. He had to go that far west to find an institution that would put up with him.
His article has been published, job accomplished.

Great. Sell me your beach house for a dollar then.
... while the seas continue to defy his command.
If the sea levels had risen as he said they would, he wouldn't have had to sound any alarm. The results would be clear by now.
They aren't. Because he's just another alarmist.
Well glad it’s all localized.
Exactly. My family has been visiting the outer banks fairly steadily since the late 60s. They are always changing. Storm and tide. We’ve seen it take beach, give it back, move it, build islands, cut islands... They are literally just big piles of sand in the ocean, of course they change. If rising sea levels were a real thing sure, low islands like these would be threatened. If it were a real thing. Predictions of a few inches rise over decades by provably inaccurate models do not make it a real thing.
One’s actions reveal what you really believe.
If liberal politicians and decision makers truly believed this, they would have changed federal flood insurance rules years ago to not allow rebuilding so close to current sea level.
In 1759, my ancestor William Howard bought the entire island of Ocracoke for 105 Pounds Sterling. Unfortunately over the years, none of my succeeding ancestors held on to any land that I could inherit so my wife and I bought a condo at Ocean Isle Beach. There is no way the Atlantic Ocean is rising. These idiots need to go away.
By the looks of that picture, you might be right.
No kidding. Again, if you could ask an adherent of “climate change religion” what the ideal world weather would be, they would say “Now!”
Like adults who want to remain adolescents their whole lives, they don’t understand natural change.
I am a believer in climate change. I just don’t believe people are the driving cause, nor do I believe spending trillions of dollars to reduce CO2 is going to put a halt to it. (Because it isn’t meant to “put a halt to it”. It is all about control.)
Very true!
But the ocean floor is sinking! 0.08 inches in 20 years! Newsweek said so!
When the ocean levels didn’t rise like the all knowing predicted, they had to come up with a new line to support their findings (fundings).
I wish a few Big Insurance companies would take their statements as factual and CANCEL ALL Policies for ANY property located within 1 mile of the Coast.
Watch how fast they change their tune about man made global warming.
