Oprah tried this and it was a disaster. She then opened a school in Africa and that seemed to work somewhat better. When Bruce Springsteen donated thousands of dollars of computers to Asbury Park schools, they were stolen within a week.
I predict LeBron is going to see the same thing.

How much of that $8 million came from his own pocket?

The I Promise public school that LeBron James opened for disadvantaged youngsters in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, will eventually end up costing district taxpayers roughly $8 million each year.
Akron school district spokesman Mark Williamson said: ‘The coverage made it look like the whole thing is his. He did a lot, but taxpayers should know it’s their investment too.’
Taxpayers will foot the bill because the school is a joint effort between Akron Public Schools, which covers the daily running of the school, and LeBron’s foundation.

I've read that he put little or no money of his own into the school. It's all just PR.
The commitment from James' foundation is reportedly for $2 million per year into this school - that's on top of the amount this public school gets from taxpayers. Apart from the school, James has apparently committed to full-ride scholarships for up to 1100 students from his hometown of Akron to the University of Akron.
I'm not going to downplay that - he is under no obligation to give a penny, so committing to millions for the education of kids from his hometown is admirable. I think his opinions on politics are ignorant and cliched but he does seem to care a lot about his hometown and its children and seems to be putting his money where his mouth is.

I read somewhere that Nike is fronting most of James’ share as part of the lifetime $1B shoe deal.

Same old go along to get along garbage. LEBron attacked Trump. Trump has every right to retaliate and to hell with this attitude that defending oneself is not “presidential.” That attitude is what has led to weak snowflakes and safe spaces. America was created by “Warriors” not WIMPS!

LeBum leaving Cleveland, again, is economically devastating for the area, a little charity doesn’t come close to making up for that.
