U.S. Steel announced Thursday that it is investing $750 million to revitalize its flagship Gary plant to gear up for increased demand in the wake of President Donald Trumps tariffs on imported steel.
The company said the investment will make significant upgrades to increase efficiencies at the 110-year-old Northwest Indiana plant, which is U.S. Steels largest, employing 3,800 workers.

Always impressive that those places have no shortage of rust on display...
We've been pimped....
Wasn't that site demolished?
Women and minorities hit hardest.
***Those jobs are gone and they’re not coming back.***
No nation can be great if it can’t produce its own steel.
The Gary Works was always the big dog on the block, but 50 - 70 years ago, the Chicago/East Chicago/Gary corner of Lake Michigan was replete with steel mills: Wisconsin Steel, Inland Steel, US Steel South Works, Acme Steel and Inland Steel are the ones I remember - and they’re long gone. Good to see that the Gary Works is still going strong.
And add Republic Steel to that list.
Grandpa worked at Wisconsin Steel, Pop worked at Republic.
If they get it going again, it wouldn’t last! Just paint everything rust brown and keep the fires burnin’!
Now that’s funny.
That's a whole lot of local contract work. A whole lot. Yipee-Kai-Yay, Hans.
Neat! My grandfather worked at Wisconsin Steel as well, and I spent some time at Republic!
When it comes down to it, that isn’t a lot of money.
Things that make you go, hummm.
No flying car (Damn you, Popular Mechanics! Damn you to Hell!). That factory complex is even impressive from ground level on I-80.
I took the overnight Rochester to Chicago round trip in a sleeper car a few years ago. We went past this plant in the early morning hours. It is a city unto itself.
Of course - especially since much of it will be quality high-CARBON steel - gonna ruin the environment for sure .....
MAGA!
