Stephen Sondheim had a hole to fill in his musical during tryouts, and this was something he threw together with surprising speed. When he played the first bars in E-flat on the piano for Glynis Johns, she broke into tears. She knew what a classic he had written.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
ONE SWEET LETTER FROM YOU
Thats Helen OConnell singing the chorus. Its 1939, and nobody has tried to tame the song. Its a Big band treatment, but a jazzy, naughty Big Band version. The middle features a fine whorehouse clarinet solo.
