Derek Jeter looked around and realized something wasn't adding up, so he did something about it.
ESPN is reporting that the Yankees legend and current part owner of the Miami Marlins is instituting a program within his organization that will require English-speaking players and coaches to learn Spanish, just as Spanish speaking players and coached have always had to do with English. There will also be an education program in the minor leagues that will offer English lessons to Latin American players.
"I've been to the Dominican and Venezuela," Jeter said. "I went to Cuba with Major League Baseball in 2016. So I've been to those countries and tried to learn as much as I could about their cultures. Everybody expects the Latin players to make an effort to speak English. Well, especially here in Miami, if you don't speak Spanish, you don't fit in. I think it's important."

Yankee fan and Jeter worshipper here. I know the knee jerk reaction to this. I have no problem with a private company (The Marlins) doing this. It’s called freedom. Big problem when government crams it down our throats.
How are they going to “require the players and management to learn”? At what proficiency do you meet the requirement?
I’d love to throw mud on Jeter over this but my beloved Red Sox are in the clutches of a far-left politically correct ownership themselves. I watch the games, period. Can’t stand the other ridiculous stuff the organization does.
Proficiency required is probably tied to batting average, ERA, Wins Above Replacement, etc.
If your WAR is over 10, you can be deaf, blind and mute, and still play for the Marlins.
What really irritates me, as an Angels fan, is that Vladimir Guerrero played in the US for 16 (!) years and still can’t speak English! He struggles through an interview. It would be considered racist for a team to hire someone to tutor Spanish speaking players to speak English.
Any number of companies require their employees to become ‘proficient’ in this discipline or that. Maybe it is justified. Maybe it isn’t. But it is THEIR business. Not mine.
The only Spanish an American needs to say is:
la inmigración está aquí
Immigration is here
Do they still play that Neil Diamond crap during the 7th inning stretch?
If you don’t speak Spanish in Miami you don’t fit it??
If you don’t speak a language other than English in an American city, you don’t fit in???
Really???
Isn’t it up to those from other countries to fit it, as he puts it?? Why is it up to us to learn another language in our own country to “fit in”????

It doesn’t feel so free when you’re required to do it as part of your livelihood. Have you noticed how many jobs now REQUIRE Spanish knowledge? We are creating a Hispanic country within the United States. When black kids in LA can’t get a job at McDondald’s because they don’t speak Spanish something is seriously wrong. http://forums.sandiegouniontribune.com/showthread.php?t=85365
Entire worksites in some places in the U.S. are monolingual - Spanish. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/local/wp/2018/07/30/feature/majority-minority-white-workers-at-this-pennsylvania-chicken-plant-now-struggle-to-fit-in/?utm_term=.18a6f5950bf1
The prevalence of Spanish speakers is even changing the accent of kids in places hundreds of miles from the border: https://www.kansas.com/news/local/article213100119.html
We’re becoming Mexico - with all that entails. It will just be a matter of time.
Central America’s pastime.
Yup. Sweet Caroline, written for Caroline Kennedy. I don’t join in.
No, just yell “La Migra”. Warning: make sure you aren’t standing between them and the back door when you do that.
How about teaching them to play ball?
So stupid.
I think if they can say “enchiladas tamales frijoles” kinda fast, they’ll pass. Sounds almost authentic.
Eat Caca Derek.
Though it’s wonderful to learn a new language.
If you want to, that is.
