A Georgia police chief is defending the use of a Taser on an 87-year-old grandmother after she was seen walking around with a knife near her home, which her family says was for cutting dandelions for a salad.
Martha Al-Bishara, 87, whose family says she doesnt speak English, was gathering the flowers Friday on property belonging to a Boys and Girls Club organization in Chatsworth when a staff member called 911 on her for trespassing, the Dalton Daily Citizen-News reported, citing the police report.
Shes old so she cant get around too well, but looks like shes walking around looking for something, like vegetation to cut down or something. Theres a bag too, the caller told police in the 911 recording. The caller, who described the woman as wearing a Muslim hat-looking thing, said there were no children outside and that the woman said she didnt speak English.
The woman's family has said that she was cutting dandelions for a salad when police used a Taser on her.
Three Chatsworth police officers reportedly responded to the scene about 70 miles northwest of Atlanta and ordered Al-Bishara to drop her knife. When she didnt follow their command, they used a Taser on her.
Police Chief Josh Etheridge, speaking to the Daily Citizen-News, defended his officers actions, saying the woman should have complied even if she didnt understand English.

The word NO means stop?
Sounds terrible, but what would YOU suggest when she didn’t put the knife down? A K9? Baton? Swarm her and take her to the ground?
I tend to agree. For example, non-English speakers the leftist pander to 24/7, cost CA tax payers tens of millions in interpreter fees alone, at the courts, schools on and on...They all demand interpreters regardless of the language...It’s bull sh*t.
"Muzzie in uniform," you say? It turns out she's not a Muslim. The above article has additional info about her, including that she's all of five-foot-two AND was wearing a cross around her neck. And her son-in-law is a pastor.
I suspected all along she was a Christian, with that babushka-style scarf on her head and the first name Martha.
Here's a couple more pictures of the "Muzzie in uniform"
Late to the game on this one. See my post 79.
She's 5'2".
She's 87.
Another article said she was smiling at them to try to show them she was friendly. The police should thank Almighty God she didn't have a heart attack from the taser, or they'd be facing homicide charges.
I'm not anti-cop. THESE cops should have shown simple common sense.
It used to be you had to learn some to come in
Dont move to a country if you cant speak the language enough to get around
Thats a flat out lie. My Polish grandfather came to this country legally, escaping the Russians. He new maybe 20 English words til the day he died. Managed to run a grocery store and raised a family.
Agreed.
She is 87, I imagine Andy Taylor of Mayberry could have gone right up to her taken the knife away, got to the truth, and left without any problems.
Seconded!
They're professionals, they had other options than to tase her.
They lacked patience, common decency and common sense.
Ditto.
They were in immigrant danger.
She probably thinks she's back there now, with new technology. I don't want to know what was going through her mind.

She’s 87 and we don’t know how long she’s been here or under what circumstances she came.
Have a good night.
She’s wearing a gold cross or crucifix in the top photo.
She looks younger than 87. And tough, too.
Look at the photo in post 84. she’s wearing a gold cross or crucifix.
You are correct, getting tased is a part of training. Our son recently got tased and said he will never tase anyone unless absolutely necessary-its incredibly painful. Im glad its a part of training so they know exactly what they are inflicting.
The family watched the video of him several times and laughed at it. Not me-Im his mom and it hurt to see in pain like that. He had such a lingering pain and that the officers submitted his reaction to the manufacturer.
Well past time to hold some of these 911 complainants—especially SWATters—civilly liable for bankrupting damages.
My Great Grandmother spoke Swedish when she came over in the 1800’s from Sweden and moved to Chicago. She picked up the language when she got here and my Grandmother was the last level of the family who actually spoke Swedish. I grew up in Chicago with a lot of Poles, Puerto Ricans and other ethnicities who being recent arrivals may ave had limited English skills. In the other direction I have visited many foreign countries, and luckily English was spoken in some but not all of them, like Dubai where a co-worker from Lebanon who spoke Arabic helped me out
As to the woman in the post, personally I think tasing her was over the top. she was 87 not 18 for goodness sake. JMHO, she may have been a visitor to the family and not an English speaking native. Not having seen a body cam and if this old lady brandished it in a threatening way at the officers I will withhold judgment on the outcome
She probably thinks she’s back there now, with new technology. I don’t want to know what was going through her mind.

Good point. Poor old woman.
Did you dee her wearing a gold crucifix or cross in post 84?
