New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo may have just handed Republicans a ready-made campaign ad for his rumored 2020 presidential bid by declaring Wednesday that America was never that great.
The Democratic star made the seemingly offhand remark as part of his rebuke of President Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan during a bill-signing in New York. But the line drew gasps from the crowd.
Were not going to make America great again. It was never that great, Cuomo said, to an awkward blend of gasps and chuckles.
We have not reached greatness, we will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged, we will reach greatness when discrimination and stereotyping against women, 51 percent of our population, is gone and every womans full potential is realized and unleashed and every woman is making her full contribution, he said.
But the "never that great" line tore through social media in a New York minute, as journalists and his political rivals seized on the remark.

What is stopping women from achieving her full potential?
And to the extent that government plays a role here, why didn’t Obama take care if the women’s issues while he was president, if these are such pressing matters?
Should have read:
Cuomo's ignorance of his nation's history is appalling - - with the essay following that statement.
According to this idiot we are doing Central American women a HUGE FAVOR by turning them back at the border.
.
Cuomo’s lower than a worm and twice as stupid.
If this nation was so awful, I wonder why Cuomo’s grandparents came over here after 1900 when the wicked nature of the USA had long been established.
Anyone actually “shocked” by this? NYers know what they voted for.
Andrew forget that we’re no longer in the obama era of America not being all that great ...
You forgot “black people’s time”...
Like father, like son.
I distinctly remember Mario Cuomo, then NYS Governor shout out that the 1950’s were NEVER as nostalgic (my word paraphrased), decent and civil as everyone is saying. Life was as bad then as it is now!!
This was in response to the popularity of tv shows like Happy Days and movies like Grease and American Graffiti.
Unfortunately that diatribe worked.
Andy is pining for the good old USSR.
I don’t know a lot of detail about them, but maybe Clan Cuomo has never had to pay a price for what they enjoy.
Ask the Germans in 1945 how great America was? Or the people of London, 1943, or the Berliners in 1949, or France in 1917, Yes, America is still great.
Andy’s father, the late Pope Mario the Pious, was an obnoxious arrogant pr*ck who tried to become governor-for-life, and the son is determined to do the same with the same smarmy attitude.
Tough when all the boys in the family are Fredo.
Cuomo is being honest in what he thinks. The hypocritical Commie bastard ought to move to Cuba.
I liked Fredo.
.
Cuomo just tried to walk it back. And made it worse.
Ive seen TV documentaries of US industrial leaders, the early automobile industry for example. There are cities like Detroit that were really impressive from historical viewpoint because thriving industries financed social engineering projects evidenced by beautiful era homes and impressive high schools.
But then the corrupt, post-17th Amendment ratification Congress started selling the US to foreigners and much of formerly beautiful Detroit consequently now lies in ruins for example.
So isnt Detroit evidence of Americas better days that Pres. Trump talks about?
Corrections, insights welcome.
Seems the only women discriminated against are Conservative women. Then again, so are Conservative blacks, Latinos and gays.
Just odd that this discrimination comes from democrats.
