Radical Prophet -David Horowitz's "The Black Book of the American Left Vol.9- Ruling Ideas"
The Claremont Review of Books (via Mollie Hemingway twitter) ^ | August 1, 2018 | Mark Bauerlein (Essayist/reviewer)

Posted on 08/14/2018 6:46:28 PM PDT by John S Mosby

In 1987, not long after David Horowitz had completed his transition from ’60s radical to ’80s conservative, he received a letter from an ex-comrade. They’d just had a political argument over the phone, and she wanted to close the conversation with a summary of his renunciation of the hard Left. They had both been Red Diaper babies, classmates at the Sunnyside Progressive School, and children of members of a Communist enclave in Queens. Now, her companion of the barricades had decided to back “the vile policies of Ronald Reagan.” Why?

She spends one paragraph clarifying her own position relative to Stalinism and socialism (“[T]here are classes and the rich are not on the same side as the rest of us. They exploit”). When she turns to Horowitz, however, we get a wholly different explanation. Horowitz hadn’t yet written Radical Son: A Generational Odyssey (1997), a powerful account of his path from the anti-war movement and the Black Panthers to the Republican Party, but she already grasped the cause.

I can’t help thinking that the views you now hold are psychological rather than intellectual in origin…. [Y]ou are operating from an emotional position which surpasses rational thinking. Also…you appear to be lacking a capacity to tolerate ambiguity.

Note the diagnostic turn. Horowitz had changed his politics, but not because he’d seen how the Left had abandoned South Vietnam once the U.S. Army had pulled out; or because the apocalyptic turn the Left had taken by 1970 (the Weathermen, etc.) frightened him; or because the “blame America first” attitude applied so poorly to places such as Cambodia, Cuba, and the Soviet Union circa 1985. (These were reasons Horowitz had given that year in a Washington Post column entitled “Goodbye to All That,” written with Peter Collier.) No, to Horowitz’s old friend, the causes could only be pathological. A psychic defect—that’s the root of his apostasy..........( several pages, covering the period up to GWBush's term of office)...... Fifteen years later, everything looks differ- ent. We hear more talk about white supremacy than we’ve heard since the passage of the Civil Rights Act, and it issues from the high rungs of the Democratic Party. Mainstream news outlets echo the contentions of the leftist hate monitor Southern Poverty Law Center, as if it were the nation’s racial conscience. The mayor of New York City wants to block Chick-fil-A from the boroughs because its CEO espouses a biblical conception of marriage, while the cast of the most popular Broadway show of our time steps out of character to chastise the vice president in the audience for his back- ward views. Corporate America trembles in fear of leftist boycotts and knows that a mob is ready to form should an incident take place that can be fitted to a victim narrative. Most of all, a good portion of the popula- tion, goaded by media, academia, the arts and entertainment worlds, and other zones domi- nated by leftist views, refuses to accept the re- sults of the recent election. The Ideal Man was supposed to be succeeded by the First Woman, not an alpha-male throwback. November 8, 2016, was a trauma, and they can’t get over it.

Molly Hemingway had this posted on her twitter (She is one super brilliant true journalist from The Federalist, trashing the Coup). Hope I have not violated any FR rules. But-- purchase the review and we should be good. It is inspiring. As I said one can purchase this review directly from Claremont. And better yet get ALL of David Horowitz's "Black Book of the American Left"... because we are going to need it even more as we progress against the crazed AntiFA demonrat party.

David Horowitz is prescient and brilliant and confronts these monsters who would destroy our Constitution and Republic. A further quote "Summer 2018 makes the Horowitz of 20 or 30 years ago look all-too-prescient. He warned conservatives in alarming terms of what was to come; he reminded leftists of their embarrass- ing misdeeds; he refused to glorify the good old days of agitation, and instead tallied the dam- age they did and continue to do; he chose the most sensitive issues of race, free speech, and the meaning of America, telling conservatives that they could not run from them."

I read Radical Son when it first came out. I would recommend reading it. It really opened my already wide open eyes. Only someone who lived it could tell the story and Horowitz lived it. I am glad that he saw the light and came to our side. I would hope that if there are any libs left with functioning brain cells that they would read it.

"They had both been Red Diaper babies"

The correct term is Red Doper Diaper babies.

Doper = Pot smoking / smoker or what ever chemicals they could ingest.

Inside the review is a list of all of Horowitz’s collected works. This review is of the last of the book series “The Black Book of the American Left” whose title emulates the brilliant work called “The Black Book of Communism”— which every commie hates because the death figures and appalling actions against their “beloved” proletariat (State murder) are all there in black and white.

Yes, Michael Savage added the “doper” cause uh... he would know (never forget his background), and he’s basically correct— as a source of “financing”.... dope.

For what it's worth, I'm a former (town of Brentwood) Long Island, New York{er.} Back in the day, when the lefties would go up to the Catskills (@ the time A.K.A. The Jewish Alps) was known, I wouldn't say WELL KNOWN, but some of us did.

You know, Tune in, Turn on, Drop out. Or better yet, I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in.

"Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" is a counterculture era song written by Mickey Newbury and, in 1968, a chart hit for Kenny Rogers (a.k.a. The same Kenny Rogers {& Dolly Parton}) and the First Edition. Said to reflect the LSD experience, the song was intended to be a warning about the dangers of using the drug. First recorded on October 10, 1967, by Teddy Hill & the Southern Soul as a single on Rice Records (Rice 5028 b/w "Stagger Lee") and produced by Norro Wilson, Jerry Lee Lewis covered the song on his album Soul My Way released November 1, 1967.

"Just Dropped In ..." by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition (with Kenny Rogers on lead vocals) peaked at number five [2] on the Billboard charts. It was Rogers' first top ten hit. The song captures the short-lived psychedelic era of the late 1960s, stands apart from the country folk harmonies that characterized most of the First Edition's catalog,[3] and got the group their first national TV audience on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

Red Diaper Babies is a term used to describe the children of American Communists. Drugs need not be involved.

Interesting. On other threads, have gotten into it with anti-illegal drug positions (based on clinical experience with legal and illegal compounds). As a matter of interest, came across the incomparable Shel Silverstein (who wrote, among many other big money tunes) “ I was stoned and I missed it”. Got zero reponse when I posted the youtube link to it.

Small trivia- knew for a short while, the actual writer of “The Gambler” (he wrote for Tree publishing, nashville), and told everyone he met how he sold the song to one of the other staff writers, Don Schlitz. Schlitz never acknowledged it (of course not for the potential royalty suit) but the feller said he sold if for $100 to pay his light bill.

Seeing that nickname Jewish Alps— made me think of a film way back that was a study of that Catskill scene (social context)— The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz— a nervous film with a very young Richard Dreyfuss (who later in Smithsonian mag compared his character to..Bernie Madoff! Oy!

Do admire David Horowitz— intellectually honest and a long path to his complete reversal of all those lies- from personal experience. He gave a lot of backup learning to the Shapiros (and Andrew Breitbart)— these people know this movement of commies from the inside.

#11. If you want a secondary “Jewish Alps”, see “Dirty Dancing”.

I went to one in the early 60’s called Shawanga Lodge and it was great. Later, in college, I fixed up a good friend of mine with the daughter of the lodges’ owners. He married her. Those were the days.

For some of these righteous leftists (like Horowitz’s acquaintance) their arriving in Hell might be their first inkling that their whole lives were on the wrong side.

Horowitz had learned that the left teaches lies and is based on lies, and moved away from the evil liars.

His acquaintance either isn’t that smart/wise or simply cannot admit how wrong she is (or ??? is making a good living at it ???).

He’s all over Twitter these days, thankfully. So is Mollie. She hasn’t been on the “All Star” panel in a couple of weeks - too conservative? Instead, they have that Urkel guy.

So, this review is of an 8-volume work, correct?

Indeed— as they walk down the glowing hot stairs they are greeted at the vestibule by... a grinning feral Che’ the “man of peace (pieces)” complete with his oozing chest bullet holes.. put there by his comrade Fidel (who tipped the Bolivians). There can only be one Fidel, and uh he’s now down there with Che’ just on the much lower circle of Hell.

Ah yes— am too young to remember anything of that sort— excetpt....late 70’s contra dances with gratefully round heeled hippie girls who wafted patchouli as they twirled by. And booze— still pretty safe, and easy to use... lol.

No— it is of the last of his books in the series— The Black Book of the American Left. Volume XIX titled “Ruling Ideas”. But the essay/review as needs be is an overview of his encounters/conversion discussed in the earlier 8 volumes. So, in a way you are right. If you go to the url posted you then can click through and this is a free access and there is a PDF download link... which worked last night. if can afford it- going to buy the entire series. The Left hates this man and he has suffered for it. The murder by the Black Panthers of a secretary he recommended to them... is what started it (she, most likely having been raped and/or worse- appalling).

Might add— this is sort of like what these old radicals are going through, and unable for the instability it would cause— to realize how much murder they supported, and the LIE which their lives have been. Who have done NOTHING for “the downtrodden”, and led by craven thieves (many of whom have rather large trust funds their daddies and mommies left them— people like Ayers- who is one giant lying f....r).

The only way to purge (to use a cheka “word”) this country of these people is to purge their entire network (of Alinsky’s in the State— the judges especially, but clearly house cleaning is in order with our federales kompromat apparatchiks). They are anathema.
