How can we address the effects of climate change on communities of color?
The Miami Herald ^ | August 13, 2018 | BY ALEX HARRIS

Climate change is a massive, complex, globe-spanning issue that affects every facet of our lives. And like most problems at its scale, it’s bound to affect the poor and people of color most significantly.

How can we address that in South Florida? This week, the issues are the environment and climate change, vital topics for residents who live at “ground zero” for sea-rise threats.

The most at-risk population are poor people. They have the least amount of resources to escape the effects of climate change, by buying products or services to make weathering the changes easier. There is also increasing concern about the concept of “climate gentrification” - low-income residents being pushed out of higher elevation zones in South Florida. But in a region booming with redevelopment and market demand that have rapidly turned once struggling neighborhoods into trendy areas, many factors could be at work, including climate concerns.

As flood insurance premiums rise and property values begin to be affected by sea rise, experts worry there will be less affordable neighborhoods for the region’s working class.

That will be a crisis “way before sea level rise hits,” said Florida International University Professor Hugh Gladwin, who studies climate gentrification in the area. “It’s like we’re losing what we need to keep going, which is a workforce that can stay here.”

I never take anyone or any article seriously that uses the phrase “of color”. It just doesn’t work and it twisting english to appease some PC language god.

Looks like we need to add “Climate Privilege” to the ever growing list of social crimes by whites.

Especially those living in Siberia and Alaska.

Some people get ALL the breaks. It’s NOT FAIR! :(

It’s always important to mention the poor and minorities as being the hardest hit. That way, their ONLY solution would be to create bigger government, with bigger government programs, and a lot higher taxes and massive new regulations to pay for it all, and of course, more liberals in government to manage everything. Conservatives not invited, nor the “rich” nor whites.

No matter how hard the left tries to use climate change as an issue to fire up their minority base, it’s not flying. They enjoy more kinetic issues, like useless demonstrations and erstwhile disruption.

We know those renowned climatologists/activists Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton will make good use of that money for “scientific” purposes!

Warmer days, more time outside makes people’s skin turn more “of color.” At least, that’s what it does for me.

> Get all the liberals to stop breathing out CO2.<

You might be on to something there. Suppose some scammer came up with a product (a bag) that promised to neutralize CO2 if you exhale into it.

Many liberals would buy that bag. The scammer would get rich. And we would be able to identify the stupidest among the liberals because they'd be carrying that bag around.

Trying to use the HOAX of a future disaster to motivate people that can’t project thought into the future is kind of a dumb plan.

It’s the first time I’ve heard that climate is racist!

It’s an amazing thought to ponder how climate change manages to hover just over “communities of color”.

Most likely, with the “climate change” hoax fizzling, making it a “racial thing” would re-charge it.

It’s just another special interest, hoax, and scam latches onto race to draw more attention to it.

What a farce.

I’m a person of color. I just noticed that when I wear white socks, my skin tone is very much different from the socks. So, what is a “person of color” really supposed to mean?

Proclamations that “climate change” will destroy civilization as we know it ring a little false.

Civilization as we know it is being destroyed left and right even WITHOUT any noticeable or irreversible changes in climate through decade after decade of observation. Climate change is a “Look, SQUIRREL!” kind of diversion.

The most at-risk population are poor people.

Yes, because impoverished "people of color" have hogged up all the prime ocean-front property. /s

I'll trade some homes up north for some of their homes in Florida.

Detroit has a lot of room development.

Florida International University Professor Hugh Gladwin, who studies climate gentrification in the area

It can't be ignored any longer. We are funding with massive government spending and huge debt - a huge, insane, highly ideological political mono-culture and organizing force in Universities, particularly the "social-sciences." It is where otherwise unproductive and useless parasites can go to survive, and thrive, because of the wave of cash the higher education industrial complex receives.
