A professor tried to stop a man from abducting his daughter and may have become the Golden State Killer's first murder victim. The retired California police officer suspected of being the notorious Golden State Killer was charged Monday with a 13th murder that of a father who was fatally shot nearly 44-years-ago while trying to protect his teenage daughter from a masked gunman who had broken into their home.
Claude Snelling, who was gunned down at his home in Visalia, California, is believed to be the first victim of suspected serial killer Joseph James DeAngelo, Tulare County District Attorney Tim Ward said at a news conference Monday.
"We have filed first degree murder charges against Mr. DeAngelo," said Ward, who added that he hopes it will provide a measure of comfort to Snellings daughter and the community.
"Those wounds never healed," he said.
DNA evidence led to the arrest of DeAngelo in April, potentially ending a decades-long manhunt for the maniac who terrorized California with shocking slayings during the 1970s and 80s and who has also been accused of more than 50 rapes in 10 California counties. DeAngelo is being held in the Sacramento County jail and has not yet entered a plea in his cases.

BOOK’EM, Danno!
There are additional details such as ballistics and other eye-witness accounts that were not general public knowledge prior to this morning’s Visalia news conference.
Only California police should have guns?
For those sorta loosely following the case, recent photos of DeAngelo fishing near Sacramento have surfaced. DeAngelo’s life is enigmatic in that he was able to stay off the radar all these years and was never even a person of interest until the DNA got him.
What is this, like his third different moniker? First he was the East Area Rapist, then the Original Night Stalker, and now he's the "Golden State Killer"?
The wheelchair is a hoax according to one of the detectives.
The Cordova Cat burglar, the Visalia Ransacker, the East Side Rapist, the East Bay Rapist, the (Original) Night Stalker, and most recently as descriged above... The Golden State Killer. There are probably others I didn’t mention.
If I were, hypothetically, to offer to send a deposit to the commissary account of the first felon that takes him out, would that be a crime?
“”The wheelchair is a hoax according to one of the detectives.””
I’ve seen several shows about this and was surprised at one on Dateline (or similar show) just a couple of weeks ago about the references to Visalia. None of the others touched on Visalia that I recall. I think it was a Contra Costa County detective who couldn’t let go of the case who said the appearance of this creep in a wheelchair was all for show and sympathy...Strange no one has ever caught up with the ex-wife or supposedly two daughters of this guy.
The last show I saw had varying opinions on what kind of neighbor he was, of course. Isn’t that always the way?
We used to live in Sacramento and visited relatives in the Citrus Heights area in the ‘70’s where he was arrested. We moved to OC, CA and lived in Irvine at the time the murder of one of the girls took place there.. We had our share of spooky, frightful events with this guy on the loose and then Ramirez who became the OTHER Night Stalker. Glad he’s under lock and key - now get him to trial.....
My Favorite Murder podcast, episode 122 is about the GSK and features Det. Paul Holes.
“”Ramirez””
He finally died in San Quentin..
Yes, that was the detective’s name and I think must have been the show I saw recently...
The Golden State Killer is a serial killer, rapist, and burglar who committed at least 13 murders, more than 50 rapes, and over 100 burglaries in California from 1974 to 1986.[4][5][6] He is believed to be responsible for three crime sprees throughout California, each of which spawned a different nickname in the press before it became evident that they were committed by the same person.
Please, please publically torture and then execute thiss bastard. Preferably with a guilotine
There would be no greater deterrent to the no food punks shooting each other in our streets than this showing what happens.

Im surprised he could resist killing all those rape victims.
It’s classic ‘escalation’. He started out as a prowler/peeping tom, then ‘graduated’ to residential burglary, then rape, then more brazen rapes, then murder to prevent being caught, then methodical bludgeoning murders for sport, all the while terrorizing his surviving victims with phone calls sometimes decades later.
