On January 1 of this year, I penned a piece the gist of which was that despite the awful player protests during the national anthem, I was going to watch the NFL playoffs. The post garnered me the heaviest excoriation Id yet experienced since starting at PJ Media in 2015. The essay provoked more disagreement and disapproval than any previous or subsequent submission. Out of hundreds of naysaying and sometimes nasty comments, both here and at Instapundit, I think a grand total of one person stated in cautious agreement that he wasnt going to let a bunch of spoiled millionaire athletes keep him from watching the battle to reach the Super Bowl.
Thats OK. Excoriation comes with the turf, as it were. If you cant take extreme blowback from the public at large for your published opinions, go blog for Better Homes and Gardens.
There was one comment in particular that stood out from all the rebuke and made me think about the protests and NFL boycott in a way I hadnt before. The commenter opined that my take on the issue was dated, coming from an older generation for which sitting around watching football games together was an important aspect of social life. He or she suggested that because of all the ways we get information now, the shared sit-down in front of the boob tube is not the hearth fire moment it used to be.

I thought it would be harder than it was last year, being a pretty serious Pittsburgh fan for all of their teams.
But between MLB and college football keeping me occupied until hockey started, it was easy.
It’s going to be even easier this year. I don’t miss the 15 minutes of play and 3 hours of walking into, out of and around huddles.
I watched just one half of one regular season game in 2017, and the 2nd half of the super Bowl. that’s IT. No “agony” whatsoever. And I had previously subscribed to Sunday Ticket and Redzone for YEARS. Then when the League joined Obama and America’s enemies, I cut them off cold. All patriotic men and women should do the same.
The quality of play today sucks anyway.
It’s all about athleticism over skill.
As mentioned I definitely won't be watching any NFL games. But I really appreciate the opportunity in this day and age to agree to disagree. What a concept so rarely practiced anymore. Like that we can uphold this beautiful and powerful American tradition. Enjoy the season!

——IMHO your entire post is virtue signaling.——
Horse manure...
These commentaries by "conflicted" individuals bore me.
I have to go with House on this one. Your post was a classic example of virtue signaling.
Well, you still have college football, and around here, high school football is big.
The Saints have always been easy to scorn and when they got rid of some of their best players, I gave up on them. Last year, the political pronouncements of Sean Peyton made it even easier.
My only point was I'm going to watch the NFL games because I want to...
Nothing virtuous about that position...
Maybe a libtard dictionary is in order here.
By the way, college players play with a lot more heart. I saw a couple of Saints games where I almost wanted to suit up and go out there and help them.
Humm...
I don't think my post meets that criteria
When was the last time you ever heard of a single team reducing ticket prices in any major sport?
Since I’ve always hated football with a passion, I’ve not been affected at all. I’ll never understand why so many people find it so addictive and appealing.
Bingo! Was a Donkey’s fan since I was 12 and I am 47 now. Watched a bit last year and they sucked and the players were disrespecting the American people. I have not watched nor will I watch this year. Sundays are better for boating, target shooting and fishing.
F-— the NATIONAL FELONS LEAGUE!
I call it the MFL.
