The problem is that the goodwill, ethics, and spirit inherent in those comments by Reagan and Hayden have been exploited by those who want to use rapid demographic shifts as a means of obtaining and consolidating power. They don't want immigrants from ‘all corners of the world’. They want immigrants who they think will embrace political philosophies that promise to ‘give them things’ in return for their vote. If the illegal immigration and the bulk of legal immigration were by anti-socialist / anti-communist Eastern Europeans, the left would be the very first to call for border control and decreased immigration.
