Ohio Special Election: Democrat Turnout 87% of 2016 Total — GOP Turnout Only 40% of 2016 Total
GP ^ | August 7,2018 | Jim Hoft

On Tuesday Troy Balderson defeated Democrat Danny O’Connor by less than 1% of the vote.

Balderson had 100,052 votes compared to Tiberi’s 251,266 votes in 2016 or 40% of the 2016 turnout.

Danny O’Connor had 98,364 votes on Tuesday compared to 112,638 votes received by Democrat Ed Albertson in 2016 or 87% of the 2016 Turnout.

This should concern Republican party leaders. The GOP to do a better job or Trump is going to face a Democrat Congress ready to impeach him in 2019.

NO. NO. Its total BS to start chalking this up to "Candidate (Balderson) is a RINO/weak/bad candidate". That's not an honest assessment.

Best assessment is the RNC has tons of money, but has NO ground game effort. It bit us in PA18 too. Ronna Romney is part of the problem.

Bingo. Her ground game/GOTV efforts suck. That’s the biggest drag going into Nov.

Kasich claimed that, not Balderson.

“As posted on another thread: GOPers in OH tell me their callers into the districts were finding that as late as Trump’s visit many Republicans there didn’t even know there was a special election!”

Yeah, that’s the ticket! The RATs managed to know that there was a special election, but the Republicans didn’t! I would find that hard to believe. It is more likely either voter apathy, or the district is full of “K-sick Republicans” who don’t like Trump. The hard fact of the matter is the RAT did way, way better than he should have. The open question is did “repubicans” cross over and vote for the RAT? We should try and find out if that was the case.

87 vs. 40. Guess who is motivated

Some of it has to do with incumbent in 2016, and new candidate in 2018. Plus Trump was running in 2016 and wasn’t in 2018. Trump at the top of the ticket brings out a lot of voters.

But Balderson did not dispute the statement.

A stunning turnout difference: our little Republican voters are just too uninformed to bring consistent victory.

But they are sitting out special elections, too lazy and too uninformed to vote.

They are all talk. They are not going to impeach him. It’s the Democrat version of repeal and replace. I don’t much care about what the committees waste their time doing. The Repukes currently control the committees and with all the crimes that have been committed by the deep state nothing has happened. It’s a joke. The Repukes will fight harder FOR Trump when they are out of power because they are cowards and don’t actually want any responsibility. Once they are just back in their natural obstructionist role they’ll end up helping Trump. They’ll start talking about repealing and replacing again too.

snip

“It’s really kind of shocking, because this should be just a slam dunk, and it’s not,”
Ohio Gov. John Kasich told ABC’s This Week on Sunday.

Balderson leads Democrat Danny O’Connor by 1,754 votes. That’s a lead of 0.9 percentage
points. There are, however, some 8,500 provisional and absentee ballots still to be counted.
If the gap were to shrink to within 0.5 percentage points, that would trigger an automatic
recount. O’Connor would need about 55 percent of the outstanding provisional and absentee
ballots to get within that margin. He would need a little over 60 percent to take the lead.
The state has 10 days before those remaining ballots can be counted, according to the Ohio
secretary of state’s office.

No one ever mentions independents who make up about a quarter to a third of the electorate.

Why do you say he is a RINO? If he is, I don’t think Trump would have supported him.

It doesn’t concern party leaders, because party leaders wanted to lose yesterday.

Period.

That they didn’t lose was all Trump.

Damn, Treehouse... you screwed the pooch. The headline is about turnout; the details are about vote choice. We don’t need any analysis to see that O’Connor did better than Tiberi’s underfunded sacrificial-lamb of an opponent. From the headline, I thought the news was about the Democrats turning out their voters better. Nothing of the sort. From the data presented, we have no idea whether the result was from turnout or vote flipping.

Damn... I meant Pundit. OK, I screwed the pooch, too. Treehouse may be incredibly opinionated, but they do research well, and say what they mean. This is an embarrassment to Pundit.

"87% is very surprising."

"Sounds like what one would expect in N. Korea, China....etc."

"But it is a scandal that only 40% of the republicans voted."

It's not 87% of all Democrats and 40% of all Republicans. It's 87% and 40% of the 2016 turnout.
