I thought I saw an article saying it dropped to 100,000 to the dollar, before popping back up to 44,000 to the dollar.

This article has the wrong exchange rate. Last week the exchange rate was 43077 IR rials to the dollar. Today it is 43871.7 IR rials to the dollar. If you want to exchange dollars for rials bring a big bag.
