[PA] Gov. Wolf announces formation of LGBTQ commission

Pa. Gov. Tom Wolf on Monday created the Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs.

"The creation of the commission on LGBTQ Affairs is one step of many we have taken to ensure obstacles are removed for anyone who is facing an unfair disadvantage based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression," Wolf said in a press release. "It's a step we took together with our stakeholder and advocacy groups and one that those involved asked for - a commission to help coordinate and drive statewide equality efforts."

The 40-member commission, believed to be the only one in the country, will be led by executive director Todd Snovel. Most recently, Snovel was the Assistant Dean for Engagement and Inclusion at Lebanon Valley College, where he led the team working with students in the co-curricular experience and initiated campus-wide efforts in equity, diversity, and inclusion. He also teaches college-level courses on the studies of genders, sexualities, and identities. He was the 2014 recipient of the Athena Award from the Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce and received the Wheeler Freedom Award in 2015 for his support of the LGBTQ community in Lebanon County.

The Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs commissioners are:

Chair - Anne Wakabayashi

Co-Vice-Chair - Shaashawn Dial

Co-Vice-Chair - Tyler Titus

And, in alphabetical order, the rest of the group: Ben Allatt, Rich Askey, Mark Barbee, Chris Bartlett, Rosemary Browne, Patricia Bucek, Kathy Cameron, Joanne Carroll, Marc Coleman, Katharine Dalke, Jim DePoe, Sen. Lawrence Farnese, Rep. Dan Frankel, Elicia Gonzales, Amber Hikes, Jodi Hirsh, Malcolm Kenyatta, Michele Kessler, Jason Landau Goodman, Maryellen Madden, Jere Mahaffey, Michael Mahler, Adil Mansoor, Adanjesus Marin, Sean Meloy, Gerald Montano, Sebastian Pelaez, Brian Patchcoski, Sarah Rosso, Kristin Seale, Adrian Shanker, Henry Sias, Rep. Brian Sims, Sean Strub, Roberto "Tito" Valdes, Harry Young and Heshie Zinman.

Two of the legislative members appointed to the commission lauded Wolf for its creation.

Frankel, from Allegheny County, is the House Democratic Caucus Chairman and the co-chairman of the LGBT Equality Caucus in the legislature. He said the panel is "a good step forward to determine needs for LGBT residents. But some things we already know: The legislature should pass the Pennsylvania Fairness Act. This bipartisan bill would include sexual orientation and gender identity or expression in the types of discrimination banned statewide in the workplace, housing and public accommodations. It's still legal in much of Pennsylvania for people to be denied a job or a place to live just because of who they are, and that's wrong."

Sims, a Philadelphia Democrat and the first openly gay lawmaker in Pennsylvania's history, was included in USA Today's Face of Pride national project in late June. He thanked Wolf for having "consistently supported equal rights for LGBTQ Pennsylvanians, and today's announcement confirms that."

The Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs joins the governor's existing commissions: African American Affairs, Asian Pacific American Affairs, Latino Affairs and the Commission for Women.

The overwhelming majority of Pennsylvanian would not approve. Must be feeling cocky to do this before the election.

This week is "Equality Fest" week in his native York County and since he couldn't inspect the damage much less make a disaster declaration after two flooding events 10 days apart I guess this is the bone he threw.

It’s a last ditch attempt to stay Gov. in the era of Trump.

These two letters: SB

“S” for straight

“B” for binary

Put them everywhere! Turn these perverts and lunatics game against them.

#SB

Can you imagine having a meeting, and right off the bat....they all want a 10-minute block of time to speak. It’d take an entire day to get the speaking time done before they move onto other affairs. Seems to me that this was a resume-builder exercise....so that forty people could claim they are in the state-leadership path.

Nope ... those twits are already using “B” ... they corrupt everything they touch.

Really, just spell it out: #Straight and #OnlyTwoSexes

That would prevent confusion. The Left is confused enough.

The new motto could be “License, Vice, and Dependence.”

The new motto could be “License, Vice, and Dependence.”

Or perhaps “Which bathroom for me?”

Bingo twice. Also, I note that there is no Commission on Religious Liberty. That there should apparently be no concern to protect religious freedom indicates that the full-throated persecution of Christians cannot be far off.

Nothing, absolutely nothing gains more traction then the announcement of a commission. It gives the voters something to hang onto in hopes that their government and elected officials are actually doing something.

That’s the practical direction this is going to take. Some Christian folks will say whoa to the idea of having open flaming going on at their enterprises, and the flamers will in turn ruthlessly prosecute/persecute whatever they can.

This sounds like one of the reasons Sessions convened a religious freedom task force. He knows what ugliness is coming down the road, and wants to face it in the civic realm. This has much more potential to cause real problems than the chasing after “Trump collusion” does.

Oh Boy! Independence for Queers, freaks, child molesters, transvestites, mentally deranged, and others who freely choose the lifestyle they wish to live........that come with special privileges granted (and protected) by government.

The old saying “you went to hell in a hand-basket” certainly applies to today’s society.
