Irony alert: EPA finds ethanol is environmentally damaging

Amid growing demands from the corn lobby that the government mandate even more ethanol be blended into the nation’s gasoline supplies, new finding call such proposals into question. One of the chief claims of the corn lobby is that ethanol is a more “green” type of energy because it’s renewable. From there, the argument is extended to claim that it’s better for the environment all the way around. But the conclusions of a study underlying the latest EPA report on the environmental impact of ethanol (seven years in the making, dating back well into the Obama administration) concludes that the opposite is true. Ethanol produces significant negative impacts on the environment, in some cases worse than the gasoline it’s supposed to be replacing.

“Kills engines.”

It’s know to kill small engines and the very old engines.

But my 2001 Tahoe has 211,000 miles on it and every mile was on ethanol blend.

It runs great.

Still.

I have known this from known, public science studies for at least 15 years if not longer. Groundwater is polluted worse from ethanol gas than just pure gas.

the only good ethanol as gas additive is for the corn holes that profit from it.

If it’s like my Tahoe the rest of the vehicle is falling apart waiting for the engine to die.

It’s a rattler. Small stuff breaks all the time.

But engine and transmission are still solid.

I'm happy for you.

I'm also happy that in Florida where I now live, ethanol-free gas is readily available, unlike the corn farmer run state I left. As a bonus, I get 10-15% better gas milleage.

Yes, it is, but here in Iowa, our senators and reps are pushing for more of it. I sent an email to my congressmen expressing my opposition to the ethanol mandates, but I’m sure my puny opinion is nothing compared to the clout the farm lobby has.

You mean contributions right? Or does clout mean contributions in Iowa.

Yeah... pretty much the same thing. As Rush pointed out, all politicians really care about are donors and their cash. Pols pretend to give a rat’s butt about what voters think.

Ethanol would quickly end if all farm equipment were mandated to use only E85 ethanol or biodiesel. Farmers love the corn subsidy, but won’t use that crap in their farm machinery.

They might want to mandate more of it in Iowa, but I made sure to fill up in Missouri so I don’t have to pay the inflated Iowa gas prices.

Here’s a quote from one of the posters on the Arizona page: “What a great station to have in Prescott. My son’s Honda Civic jumped from 29.3 MPG to 53.3 MPG in just one tank of E0 gas”

I’ve noticed from the very few times I’ve been lucky enough to use ethanol-free gas that I get about 10-15 mpg more per 10-gal tank. The whole thing is crazy.

Folks lets get beyond your feelings on the issue.

Ethanol is the cheapest, easy way to increase octane in our fuel. Now all here, I assume, understand octane and it’s role in engines, right...………………………………….

Nothing is perfect. Ethanol has a role and all the knowledgeable people here understand that, right...……….

I was getting very tired of the ads proclaiming what a great thing the ethanol fuel is. The other day I heard one proclaiming that ethanol aided the ground-level ozone problem(didn’t know we had one). I thought that sounded suspicious,so I researched it a little & it seems that the opposite may be true. Well, maybe ethanol is still a good thing....it keeps people employed making something that nobody really asked for or wanted, much in the same way as our Congress works.

And they keep studying and studying and need evermore giving grants to decide if oxygenates are carcinogenic although they suspect they may be. More grants, please! Meantime, no interest in a fuel resembling gasoline, that has been shown to eliminate all three major pollutants. Isn’t it surprising to learn that DJT and Governor Perry have bought the boondoggle and are determine to increase the use of ethanol and biomass? DOE is headed for 90 octane using ethanol and biomass. The roads will become like NASCAR races, with flames out the rear spewing pollution.

Yeah. That came to mind. No ethanol in gasoline means cheaper steaks (which I can’t afford anymore). Doubtless it will make the price of gasoline go down, too. Now, if we could only get tetraethyl lead reintroduced . . .

And, no doubt, the government spent several million dollars on it.

Rope. We need lots and lots of it.
