Poll: Senate race between Cruz, O'Rourke a dead heat
The Hill ^ | 08/01/18 | Max Greenwood

The Texas Senate race between Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas) is neck and neck, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

The 2018 Texas Lyceum Poll showed Cruz leading O'Rourke by a hair — 41-39 percent among likely voters. That's well within the survey's margin of error of 4.67 percentage points.

That's a particularly tight margin for Texas, which has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in three decades.

The findings come weeks after O'Rourke, a three-term congressman, reported a staggering $10.4 million fundraising haul in the second quarter of the 2018 cycle, bringing his cash-on-hand to just under $14 million.

That's far more than the incumbent Cruz, who raised about $4.1 million in the second quarter and has about $9.3 million in cash on hand, Federal Election Commission filings show.

Texas has normally been a reliably red state, voting for President Trump over his Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton by 9 points in 2016.

Chris Wilson, a former pollster for Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign, called the poll's findings into question on Wednesday, saying that the partisan breakdown for the survey “looks nothing like Texas voters.”

Why do I dump on Lyn’ Ted every time I see him mentioned? Aside from his lies, which turned me from being an early supporter and regretting the hundreds of dollars I gave to his campaign, consider his electioneering tactics. He’s still at it! I just got a mailer from him last week or so: “Official Washoe County Summons”, “Summons Enclosed - Open Immediately”. Seriously?! Didn’t these do enough to damage his reputation already?

Heck, he hasn’t apologized even once for his Never Trumper ways.

Correct. The roots of “The Resistance” can be traced to the hysterical Never Trumpism of Cruz’s campaign. Blacklists, etc.

Cruz has never walked that back and has chosen to tip toe through the tulips since Trump arrived in the White House. He could have chosen to be a powerful ally of POTUS but has chosen not to be. So be it.

There was so much acrimony there, though. “You are the single biggest liar ....” Then the convention. *le sigh*

Not likely but if it does one thing, it hopefully will tell Ted Cruz to concentrate on Texas and ignore what is going on in Iowa.

Since he likes scripture...
‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?
Austin is the log in the eye of Texas.

There are many here in Texas who are not happy with Cruz due to his little stunt at the convention. His refusal to speak up against the Deep State spying on Trump and other violations of civil liberties is not good.

Beat me to it. Polling Lyceum is as skewed at polling a Trump rally.

Polls and the “news” are both being used to influence rather than inform.

I don’t care if he Mooned the Audience at the Convention.

The Primary is where you Cull the Herd. In the General, you Vote for the Republican or you enjoy the Rats running the Show without complaining.

All that Matters is 51 PLUS Seats in the Senate, or you watch the Supreme Court (and every other Federal Court) turn into a Star Chamber with no respect for our beloved Constitution.

Numero Uno reason I Voted Trump, THE SCOTUS. Before that I was a Cruzer, but I jumped off that Train pretty quickly once I realized that he and every other Republican on the Debate Stage (except Trump) would be squished by Hillary.

Just my $.02, your Mileage may vary.

The polling gets this conclusion from basically the 18-29 voter group.
50.2 % Beto and 30.2 % have no pick.

As soon as I saw the headline, I knew it was a Lyceum poll. They did the same thing with Wendy Davis and Hillary Clinton. They made runaways seem like tight races.

Consultants and pollsters are often subtly guided in directions that the paying organization want them to go. Its usually a matter of preconceived outcomes in search of justifications.

I once worked on a project that proposed a path that was contrary to the self-interested desires of certain organizational elements that felt threatened by change. It didn’t matter that there were technical, financial and efficiency benefits associated with the recommendations. They didn’t want to hear it. Needless to say, professionalism is often not appreciated and follow on work is unlikely in such cases.

18-29. A group that has a historically low turnout rate.

Good for you and good for us.

I’m not in Texas (yet?), but I have Friends there who know the Cruz Family personally. They were telling me about him before he won his Senate Seat.

That is why he was my first choice when he ran for POTUS. I sent a few Bucks his way but it didn’t take long for me to realize he wouldn’t stand a chance in a National Election against The Butcheress of Benghazi and the Russian Uranium Saleswoman of the Century.

The poll is suspicious, IMHO. It has Republicans for other offices (Gov, Lt Gov, et al) leading by very comfortable margins but portrays Cruz/O’Rourke as neck and neck.

Doesn’t make sense. But, then, polls rarely do :)

We only have to compare the Texas primary election votes between the two parties to know what’s going to happen this November.

Sure it is. Ted loves this kind of talk because it helps him raise money; but the truth is it’s not true.

Cruz is fortunate that Trump needs a to hold a solid R majority in the Senate this year and Cruz has an R next to his name. For Trump I’ll hold my nose once again. Nobody else would get that courtesy.

I see them in Highland Park, Garland, Lake Highlands, all over East Dallas and his stickers on cars. If his base is small, they are enthusiastic.
