Only two Idaho drivers have been cited for driving too slowly in the fast lane since the states new slowpoke law took effect July 1. Three other drivers got warnings that they better go the speed limit in the left lane or scoot over.
Those numbers, current as of July 27, are from the Idaho State Police, which patrols the states highways. Tickets for speeding during that time frame numbering 2,495 far surpass these five cases of impeding fast-lane traffic.
Even so, the new law gives troopers another tool to keep roads safer, said bill sponsor Rep. Lance Clow, R-Twin Falls.

“And hes got me trapped”
Practice will help you identify who’s going to put you in that situation. Pay attention and trust your instincts. Don’t move for those, don’t change your speed, and watch the magic unfold.
There are two types of harmless but annoying-to-me folks on the long road:
One is what I call the lonely type. They speed up and stay near you instead of passing. They move fore, aft, to the side, and never go away. It’s like some weird animal courtship. For these, I am happy to speed up and get far enough away to put another “mate” in between me and them.
The other, which I see more often is what I call the oscillator. They will ride your butt for a few minutes then mysteriously drop back about a quarter mile. You think they’re gone for good but continue the dance - up, then back, up then back. I have no way to account for this habit other than that they are just inattentive. I don’t move over for them and they actually don’t seem to mind. Of course, they could just be using me as both the canary in the coal mine for cops and a speed regulator, since I’m pretty constant.
I seem to recall that automobiles come with these fancy newfangled things called suspension systems that smooth out such bumps.
It’s just like the nit-whits who jam on their brakes to crawl over a set of train tracks.
I always fantasize about getting a military hummvee with a remote controlled machine gun mounted on the roof. I wouldnt load it but would love to point the gun at the crazy drivers in the Bay Area.
It’s been years, but I have employed the drunken master strategy.
Swerve back and forth enough to make them think I’m drunker than they are. Encouraging them to put some distance between us.
On my Monday trip across the Altamont Pass near Livermore Ca I moved out of the fast lane for a tailgater even though the traffic was heavy in all the lanes. I was in the fast lane. Not 30 seconds later that car slewed through construction cones to avoid rear-ending the next car ahead.he barely managed to stop in time.
Virginia passed a law a couple years ago making it illegal to be in the left lane unless you are overtaking traffic in the right.
No one obeys it. The LEO’s do not enforce it. I’d guess still 55% of all drivers hang in the left lane.
AMAZING however that in Europe and South America not only do drivers stay in the right lane, but EVERYONE in the left lane quickly moves over to the right when a faster vehicle approaches from the rear - no need to flash lights.
How is it that this is not a fundamental principle taught in Driver’s Ed here? And not emphasized in our DMV manuals???? HUH???????
Ok - here is a survey: WHY do left-laners stay in the left lane?
I believe 2 primary reasons, depending on personality: a. Insecure drivers & a lot of women hang in the left lane. b. Selfish, arrogant and controlling types (mostly men) insist on hogging the lane and making you go around them.
Other reasons? What do you think? I’m sure there are more......
I seem to get the TN drivers who ONLY speed up when I go to pass them! Are they offended that I didn’t want to dawdle behind them in the right lane?!
Yeah I see a lot of those.
Are they NASCAR wannabees?
I suspect that almost passing them, reminds them that they are going slow and they speed up. Or maybe they are passive aggressive and just don’t like getting passed.
” Apparently though; we have too many stupid people in America who dont know how to drive properly so they need a nudge to get a clue.”
I don’t know what the rules are in other states but in mine the cars entering the interstate have to yield to highway traffic and merge safety.
Somewhere that must not be the law because there are occasional idiots who just blast onto the highway expecting traffic to allow them entry.
Thanks for saving me some typing..i like this idea a lot
LOL!
Seven years I commuted; 36.7 miles and back along I5 each day.
Only I would say...
WHOA! There goes my rabbit!"
Wow, this is great. I got pulled over by a cop near Downieville, CA for going too slow. I was going below the speed limit looking for a good pull-out so the kids and I could get down to the North Fork of the Yuba River to fish. I probably was doing 35 or 40 in a 45 zone. He gave me a warning...and then told me where to go fishing.
In the Idaho story, farther down it says this: “Two years ago, a bill was introduced addressing the issue of passing on two-lane roads, Clow said. That law now allows drivers to go 15 mph over the speed limit to safely pass a vehicle going below the speed limit. This law does not apply to multilane highways or Interstate 84”
Wow...must be the first state in the country to allow you to break the speed limit while passing. I always thought it was downright stupid — there’s no way you can pass somebody in a 60 zone who is doing 57 without going over the speed limit (unless you have five mies of straight, empty road in front of you).
Or you can accelerate to 80 and get around and move over. Why is that so hard. I know it took time to get your cruise control set to exactly 0.7 MPH faster than the car 230 feet ahead and assuming a safe 80 feet distance to merge back over then it will take approximate 3 minutes to complete your pass. Thats not passing. Why cant you understand that people dont or should not use cruise control to pass.
80 is illegal. Doesn’t matter if you’re passing or not.

You are wrong. You are NOT the police. What if they HAVE a good reason to be speeding and YOU are oozing along?
The left lane is usually smoother. Big rig trucks destroy the right lane first.
True in some states, NC and SC in particular.
Rarely the case in Virginia....
