Smoking banned in public housing nationwide, effective today
CBS ^ | July 31, '18 | CAITLIN O'KANE

Smokers can no longer light up in or near public housing facilities in the U.S. due to a new rule that went into effect July 31. The nationwide ban on smoking in public housing was implemented nearly two years after the rule was passed by the Obama administration in 2016.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) now prohibits the use of cigarettes, cigars and pipes in all public housing units and common areas, as well as any outdoor areas up to 25 feet from public housing and administrative office buildings. The ban does not apply to e-cigarettes, snuff and chewing tobacco, although there may be restrictions on those in some areas.

HUD says about 228,000 public housing units under more than 600 local agencies were already smoke-free, and the new rule wipes out smoking in more than 940,000 other units. The ban is expected to save government housing agencies $153 million a year in repairs and health care costs, including $16 million for costs tied to smoking-related fires, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated in 2014.

HUD said the new policy would reduce health hazards from secondhand smoke and encourage residents to quit smoking.

The ban on smoking products must be included in public housing tenants' leases, HUD says. Tenants will not be evicted for a single instance of smoking, but could face eviction after several smoking violations.

For those who want help to quit smoking, officials recommend calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) toll-free to talk to a trained coach, or go to www.smokefree.gov.

Well the anti smoking nazis managed to sure screw up Auto Racing. No Tobacco adds or Sponsorship anymore WORLDWIDE. The exuse for screwing NASCAR was “the Children” !!! Hello? The Kids at a Race don’t care about tobacco. They want to see/ be a Racer. Just because a Kid wanted a Harry Gant T-Shirt because of Harry Gant NOT because Skoal was His sponsorship. it was because of looking up to a hero figure not a fricking plant leaf. Winston pumped major $$$$$$ into NASCAR as prize money. Yes they were advertising but not to the Kids. The Kids were under, and still are under more Peer Pressure to start smoking or dipping/chewing tobacco than any Racing Sponsorship has ever done.

Good, until we see media showing pictures of families dumped to the curb. Better to simply ban tobacco entirely. There is no upside to tobacco usage. It is a hazardous product that kills people (including my own father).

I just wish the cigarette makers could start printing the strength estimates again. Light, Lite, Ultra Light, Regular, etc. It’s otherwise quite confusing to both customer and cashier.

It’s worse when the cashier doesn’t speak much English. In those cases, I just show them the empty container and point at it. “Ola, tiene estos?” (Hi, do you have these?)
If I’m at a 711, and the cashier is Paki, I just point, although most of the younger ones are fluent enough in English.

How would one know if you’re breaking
the rules and smoking? It can’t
possibly be easily enforceable
unless other taxpayer paid methods
put in place. I smoked in a office
at a Business. No one knew for 5
years. I confessed during layoffs
at my exit interview.
It’s exactly like your teenage
kids stealing one of dads cigarettes.
In a 100 unit complex of government
housing (if an observer for the
government) how could you determine
who the lawbreakers are?

I agree. As a former smoker I know it’s a lousy habit and it was hell quitting because I still enjoyed it immensely apart from the fact I was starting to have some trouble breathing during activities. But as a citizen of a free country I believe it is everyone’s choice whether to smoke or not. I totally understand banning from common areas but not in one’s own rented apartment. What next? A footwear ban so they don’t have to replace carpets when you move out? No partaking of red wine because it can stain things? As for the yellowed walls they’re supposed to repaint anyways so...

Was a size 4 as a smoker. 11 years later up to a size 12. Never craved sweets when I smoked. Now, I”m sort of addicted to sugar. At least, sugary drinks with caffeine.

Exactly - anyone in such housing that can afford smokes needs to be ousted.

Okay. Everyone quit smoking. Then, let’s stop subsidizing obesity.

Can they be paid with food stamps?

No.

EBT has been implemented in all states since June 2004.

That's working well...

Beneficiaries and costs increased sharply with the Great Recession, peaked in 2013 and have declined through 2016 as the economy recovered.[3]

How about they ban graffiti, garbage and vandalism?

Banning BASTARDY would be the biggest help!
