Abc's explanation:
Tajikistan is one of the poorest former Soviet republics and has struggled with poverty and instability since its independence in 1991. How about this from Wiki: Sunni Islam is, by far, the most widely practiced religion in Tajikistan.

Most of these people are do-gooders in total denial.
They usually are liberals who think every place is the same and Moslems aren’t any meaner than any other people. Thus they can just travel anywhere they want to do their hobby unencumbered.
Maybe that should be the next project - a collage/list of all the “tourists” terrorized by Moslems (and a few in trouble messing around in serious commie countries).

And I would voluntarily choose to become a tourist in Tajikatsan because, why???
Yes, I am sorry for the victims, but choosing, as a civilian, to be in an area where you know Islamist extremists are active is just plane dumb. And if you didn’t know the proximity and relationships, cultutally and ethnically between Afghanistan and Tajikistan then for that reason also you were too ignorant to be choosing to go there.

Adventure tourism was never an itch I needed to scratch, but I kinda, sorta understand the appeal. A couple of my cousins, when they were much younger, got out to some quite remarkable places. I choose my friends more carefully than I choose my cousins, and my friends have more sense (although some had some exotic deployments in the military or State Department).
If you think Trump talks tough about the 'stans, you should hear the State guys -- worker bees, not the politicos and aspiring ambassadors, who are suckup artists -- talk when they're off duty with no snitches around.
The world has gotten a lot more dangerous for Western travellers in the past 20 years. The predators have lost their fear of retribution.

2 American cyclists among 4 dead in Tajikistan attack claimed by ISIS When you travel to uncivilized sh*thole "countries", you take your chances. Why would anyone want to voluntarily go to any of the "stans"?
