The devastating Carr Fire in Northern California continued to consume tens of thousands of acres overnight, heading into several rural Shasta County hillside areas, forcing the evacuation of one hamlet and burning more homes.
The five-day-old fire’s burned area jumped from 48,000 acres Friday evening to 85,000 acres by midday Saturday, a swath of 132 square miles, and authorities reported five dead and about a dozen missing.
“This fire is a disaster,” Sacramento firefighter Chris Harvey told a crowd of residents about 11:30 a.m. Saturday as ash rained down on them. “It’s a very large event with very high speed and very high temperatures that are going to last a couple of days.
“The fire still has very explosive behavior.”

Listened to interview today with a climatologist named Young who is working with Cal Fire oversight...he said he’s talked with 30-year firefighter vets who said this fire doing things they’ve never seen before...mentioned special fire proof glass on one truck was blown by fire from unknown distance

Maybe after these past two years we can get serious about real measures to mitigate the drivers behind these wildfires. I’ve read that property owners are not allowed to clear brush more than a certain distance around homes without special detailed permission from state authorities.
There’s always a reason to stop clearing, a mouse, a turtle, a rare plant, any and all excuses to keep responsible, experienced people from doing the right thing. How many rare and exotic species are damaged in these fires? The eco-morons don’t give this a passing thought. The same mindset drives our manufacturing to China where the polluting of Mother Gaia is horrendous, and not a care is given, I-phones still sell in the millions.
I do not even want to go outside to get the mail because of the heat. I cannot imagine fighting fires in this brutal heat! Yikes!
