In 1942 Jerome teamed up with Johnny Mercer as his lyricist. At this point in his career, Johnny led a band and was best known as a vocalist, but his work with Jerome would send him in a different direction. Johnny described their work on the movie as “a set of memorable songs to entertain audiences until the plot came to its inevitable conclusion.”

This was a Columbia musical set in Buenos Aires that starred Fred Astaire, Rita Hayworth, Adolphe Menjou and Xavier Cugat. Jerome wasn’t happy with the addition of Cugat to the cast, but when shooting wrapped, he was so pleased with the band’s performance of his songs that he presented Cugat with a silver baton.

Although Hayworth had a decent singing voice, Harry Cohn, the boss at Columbia, had a professional dub her. Cohn was fond of saying that if something was wrong with a movie, his butt would twitch. This prompted screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz to comment, “Imagine that. The whole world wired to Harry Cohn’s ass.” Herman was never permitted in Cohn’s presence again.

She hit her stride on TV, first as the host of a variety show and then the host of a talk show. But she got her start in the Big Band era as a vocalist. This was the hit version of the song.
