German police said on Wednesday they had seized about 100 Nazi-era rifles, over a dozen grenades and other munitions components from a German man who is suspected of violating gun laws by planning to clean the weapons and sell them.
The man, who comes from the eastern German town of Schkopau, is believed to have found the weapons - most of which were rusty and covered with dirt - using a metal detector, police in the state of Sachsen-Anhalt said in a statement.
e was released in consultation with local prosecutors, but faces potential charges of violating strict German laws on the possession of weapons. Officials had no immediate comment on when or whether he would be charged.
A local police official said the man was a German citizen, but gave few further details.
Police stopped the man, who was driving a small truck, near the town of Beuna. A search of the vehicle and his home resulted in the discovery of numerous weapons dating back to World War Two, as well as a handgun that requires a permit.

Look like two STG44’s and an MG 42.
You could imagine what’s out there all over Europe from two World wars.

The Germans have a peculiar chronic blind spot in the introspection department.

A little bit of Hoppes and they’ll be just like factory new.

I've seen a few videos on youtube of guys sweeping the German countryside and coming up with some real neat stuff.
It made me price out metal detectors.
Damned shame about this guy.

Just search YouTube for "WWII Metal Detecting"
It's amazing what the Russians dig out of waterlogged bunkers-- what I saw online in the 90's was still serviceable, especially if they found arms still packed in a crate wrapped in oilcloth.
Now even almost all the better looking stuff is heavily pitted.

I guess they need to ban metal detectors.

I did a metal detecting investigation of an old landfill out at the airfield where the Hindenburg crashed. Sort of neat to think some of the targets might have been it. I was just trying to figure out the extent of the landfill for remediation.
Almost every day somebody would stop (still an active airfield) and ask if I was looking for the “Harley Davidsons”. There was a rumor that a bunch of them (20??), with sidecars, had been packed in grease and crated up ready to be shipped overseas, but then the war (WWII) ended. So they dumped them into the landfill.

Yeah, that's what they are alright. Good thing the authorities took them. Sure wouldn't want Fritz reworking them and killing somebody!(sar.) Seriously though, you're right. There is still so much ordnance in the ground they'll be finding stuff for the next hundred years. Ironically there's more ordnance left over from WW1 than WW2 because in WW1 artillery was the predominant weapons system.

Oh I'm there now. Not with a metal detector but I'm there. Bermuda shorts, black socks, black dress shore, sleeveless T-shirt. Yup. Drive around doing 25mph in the 45 mph zone, left blinker going all the time. Yup, I'm that guy.
