Yeah like armed security. Duh. In training environments most times soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen are sheep to the slaughter.
In 1976, the infantry company that I was assigned to was participating in REFORGER exercises, and my platoon was designated to patrol a stretch of the Rhine within Heidelberg. At the time, I was the M60 machinegunner in my squad, and we nine were given our stretch to patrol. The exercise postulated that "enemy" (in this case meaning West German) special forces were going to try to cross the river during the night.
At about 0130, we heard a noise on the river and could see faint splashes from what we assumed were oars in the water. My squad leader positioned me and my assistant gunner behind a concrete divider and I was instructed to open up (we had been provided with an ample amount of blank ammuntion) when told to.
After the squad leader had positioned the rest of the squad, we waited for a little while until the squad leader popped a white starshell and yelled "Fire 'em up!"
I immediately centered my "fire" on the movement that I saw on the river and let it rip. I worked through two 100-round belts before I took a pause to observe. The starshell was still burning, slowly falling, and I was able to see the "enemy" clearly ...

I assume that it was some old fisherman on a night-time outing, but he was rowing madly back across the Rhine, his fishing pole flailing every which way, as he tried to get away from our mad minute. I still chuckle about that when I recount it ...
