I’m not seeing why they don’t do this. Pick an NCO out of the group, give him a bit of training regarding the use of lethal force in civilian situations, then arm him.
Perhaps the BB gun guy in this story was just some old drunk. But there are plenty of wanna-be jihadists around these days that would love to take out a US serviceman or two.

I will say that if that was one of those pump pellet guns though, they can pack quite a wallop.
It’s not just a simple BB gun. It truly is a lethal weapon.
