Schiff: Trump’s Security Clearances Threat ‘What You See in Authoritarian Regimes’

During a statement on Monday, House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) said that the White House’s statement that President Trump is looking to revoke former CIA Director John Brennan’s security clearance as well as examining the clearances of several other former officials is “exactly what you see in authoritarian regimes.”

Schiff said, “Today’s action, suggesting that we will punish critics of the president by stripping them of their security clearance, that is not what you see in a democracy. That is exactly what you see in authoritarian regimes.”

He added that the move is a “despicable action…to try to silence critics,” and the “cowardly action of someone who is afraid of criticism.

There used to be two principal requirements for access to classified material. This was true when I served in the U.S. Navy and in my 30+ year civilian occupation.

They were:
(1) Possess the required security level, and
(2) HAVE A NEED TO KNOW.

When I had a transfer to a new command (either Ship or Base), the security clearance had to be re-established. When I was Honorably Discharged, all the clearances died.

There are two components, clearance and need to know.

Clearances are attached to billets. When you are no longer in a billet, your clearance should be suspended.

If you do not have the need to know, you should not have access to classified information, regardless of anyclearance you may possess.

You do not retain a clearance “as a courtesy”, regardless of what that scum, Clapper might claim.
