Students left dangling as Art Institute of Charleston shuts down

The rise and fall of the Art Institute of Charleston took just 11 years, carrying with it the aspirations of hundreds of young artists — and leaving some of them struggling beneath a mountain of debt.

The for-profit chain of colleges opened its Market Street location in April 2007 amid fanfare from local political leaders, including then-Mayor Joe Riley, who had invited the school to train workers for the hospitality and restaurant industries.

The main reason why colleges and universities are too expensive is the easy availability of “free money” from Uncle Sugar.

Eliminate federally backed student loans and watch tuition costs plummet.

Downwards.

I worked around some of their IT students.

A few sharp ones. The rest, I will pass on.

I went to a little tech college and learned computer repair in 99.

Six classes were all poor state employee me could afford. They turned out to be enough to get me somewhere after several years of paying dues.

If you are good at what you do, you become a creative or art director. I was a photographer and illustrator, good, but not willing to work for minimum wage or play political games with my work, so I became a machinist to pay the bills. So I’m in that 10%. Maxfield Parrish knew his way around machines too, so I still have hope, lol.

I have a very simple definition of Art.

If I could do it, it ain’t Art.

The best(IMHO) will always be Night Court.

There will never be another group who meshed so well together.

I still think “The Drew Carey Show” was underrated.

As has been explained to me, that is the goal.

It is also why I was rejected for having tuition reimbursement. Which had been promised to me in writing.

They didn’t want me to use that degree (MBA ironically) to go somewhere else. SO I went somewhere else anyway.

Students graduation from the Savannah College of Art and Design do great work and do quite well after graduating. But then again, SCAD has been around a long time.

They also own a nice chunk of downtown Savannah, but, as they renovate and keep the styling of the buildings as they go, I have no problem with it.

My duaghter’s classmates always talked about not “selling out.” That usually lasted until the eviction notice arrived. Then creating some plates and coffee mugs for the local “tres chic” cafe looked a lot more like art than it did at first.

The herd is thinned quickly.

Fortunately, my daughter continues to scratch out a living. And one sale usually leads to another. Consistency and quality (and functionality) mean a lot in the ceramics biz. I know a lot more about that stuff than I should.

The “Art Institutes” are in every American city. We have one in Philadelphia that has art, music and hospitality as curriculum. I never knew it was a scam and sham but I am not surprised. Cooking schools are everywhere.

It was a sham/scam IMHO, because it didn't stay long and was way over priced. The politicians supporting it, including the former mayor, should be ashamed. It was priced well over what their students could earn and service their debt, IMHO, and therefore not economical. One of the schools officials blamed greedy capitalism for the school's demise, as if he had no self awareness.

Someone posted how economical the cooking school is at the tech college in Charleston, and the students can graduate with very little debt and have a chance to make money, earn a good living and pay off loans.

This fiasco never would have been possible without the fed gov's easy money student loan program. Now that program is owned by the government, thanks to Obama.
