Four 'Baby Trumps' are ready to taunt the President at Bedminster. Will the FAA let them 'fly'?

The massive 'Baby Trump' balloon that gained global fame photo-bombing the London skyline during President Trump's visit to the U.K could soon be headed to Bedminster, thanks to a group of Democratic activists who hope to taunt the President whenever he stays at any of his golf courses.

But there's still one problem that might put Baby Trump in a corner: Some rather obscure FAA regulations on dirigible airships.

"There's no local ordinance preventing us from doing it," said Jim Girvan a retired Somerset county worker who's now a Democratic activist with the Branchburg Democrats. "But obviously he adds a different element to the calculation."

"He" of course, is the non-inflatable President, and both the U.S. Secret Service and Federal Aviation Administration have strict rules about what can and cannot enter the FAA's Temporary Flight Restriction area that surrounds him.

Technically, nothing can fly - no planes, no drones - in the 10-nautical-mile-radius surrounding wherever the President is staying.

Jim Peters, a spokesman at the FAA's office of communications, all referred questions about Baby Trump to the U.S. Secret Service.

But luckily for the Democrats, the Secret Service notes that Baby Trump is always tethered to the ground with ropes, so it doesn't really fly so much as float.

Sling shots are illegal in New Jersey, as part of our gun laws. I am not joking.

As a (soon to be ex) resident of Bedminster let me say that I welcome this. It has been so long since we had anything to run our drones into. (I kid).

If they let these things fly I envision an airborne Hillary, jet-propelled complete with rude farting noises.

Do they realize that these balloons are going to help President Trump? I see them as being a collector’s item. Gonna make someone a lot of money. Put MAGA on them and that will sell even more. Folks will have MAGA Trump babies on their front lawns as decorations. lol

Where would that be? I have lived here for nine years and haven’t found anything close by (that isn’t a police range or private club).

Those “obscure” rules are long standing FAA regulations governing moored balloons.

This particular one will be troublesome for the NJ Trump golf course mentioned since it is 3 miles from Somerville Airport -

101.13 Operating limitations.

(a) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, no person may operate a moored balloon or kite-

(1) Less than 500 feet from the base of any cloud;

(2) More than 500 feet above the surface of the earth;

(3) From an area where the ground visibility is less than three miles; or

(4) Within five miles of the boundary of any airport.

(b) Paragraph (a) of this section does not apply to the operation of a balloon or kite below the top of any structure and within 250 feet of it, if that shielded operation does not obscure any lighting on the structure.

In this case, FAA airspace regulations certainly trump (pun intended) local ordinances.
