Germanys long-understaffed army has a new plan to boost recruitment: allowing foreigners from other European Union countries to serve in the unified armed forces (Bundeswehr). The defense ministry confirmed on Saturday that it was seriously considering the idea.
The Bundeswehr is growing. For this, we need qualified personnel, a Defense Ministry spokesman told German news agency DPA.
Speaking with local newspaper Augsburger Allegemeine, Social Democrat (SPD) defense expert Karl-Heinz Brunner said that he could imagine EU citizens serving in the Bundeswehr. But he warned that any soldier who fought for Germany must be promised citizenship.
If citizens of other countries are accepted, without the promise of getting a German passport, the Bundeswehr risks becoming a mercenary army.

Yes, back in 2011.
Another legacy of Frau Merkel.
Boot! This soldier has the belted ammo turned the wrong way....Lolololol..........
Prior to the fall of the Roman Empire, the Romans did the same like thing......
A German Foreign Legion? The Auslander Abwehr?!
Back to the days of the Hessians....
When are true German citizens going to stand up to the idiot politicians in their government and the EU?
I’m sure that offering muslim terrorist immigrants arms, training and citizenship will not improve the German military forces. ...More like welcoming a Trojan horse.
Here’s the thing... your hypothetical kid from Nigeria only needs to make it to France. Once feet dry and registered as a French resident, he then makes his way to the nearest Bundeswehr recruiting office. Germany’s little plan may imagine that it’s going to net Frenchman, Spaniards and Irishmen, but what their really going to get are North Africans, Syrians & Pakistanis who will get a ‘quick rinse’ in the aforementioned EU countries.
Talking about it...doesnt mean anyone will enter the door. I doubt that itd attract more than 300 a year, and that German language requirement would be the biggest hindrance.
Depends on how compensation is structured and what the mission will be. Actually, theres quite a large market for mercenaries, now referred to as contractors. We (U.S.) utilize a large number of contractors in the Middle East. Lots of special ops guys put in their 20 then jump to a contractor gig for a bunch more money which is ok, nothing wrong with that.
That worked really well for the Romans.
And the Germans should know it ...
> increase cool equipment <
Are broomsticks cool? Due to a lack of equipment, the German army used broomsticks for machine guns during a 2014 NATO exercise.
Why would they have any problems recruiting? The last I heard, the German Army only had around 60,000 troops.
This has to be satire...
Salting your military with hostile foreign aggressors should work out well for Germany.
