The Pentagon is sending $200 million to Ukraine to assist the country with its self-defense capabilities.
The Defense Department issued a statement Friday, saying the move reaffirms the countrys relationship with Ukraine.
The funds bring the total aid to Ukraine up to $1 billion since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the U.S. must take action against Russias destabilizing activities, including its illegal occupation of Ukraine.

Obama sent them Teddy Bears and Trudeau sent them Sleeping Bags for cuddling
Ukraine is a failed state. It had 25 years to turn itself into a real nation, but seems its elites were more interested in looting the country. And Obama and his team helped push it over the edge.
I hate seeing Trump trying to please his (and our) enemies on the Left.
Waste of money, supporting the European offensive on the Eastern Front. There is zero American interest there.
It is not possible to make a plausible argument on how this is in the best interests of the US.
Though anyone who believes it is should try.
“There is zero American interest there.”
None whatsoever.
But that's exactly what Obama and McCain did Mr. Secretary.
Ukraine has its problems, but is not close to a failed state. I say that as someone who worked 6 years with the Government of Afghanistan.
Get your facts straight. Im assuming youre not a Russian troll.
There is a strategic reason Trump is providing this aid. It is a stick, an early confirmation of what Trump said, I'll be the worst enemy he's ever had the worst he's ever had." Providing significant lethal aid will move into that category.
Exactly, although it was never really a state to begin with.
And, it’s not Ukraine, it’s The Ukraine.
Read corn pone opinions by Mark Twain. Show me where a man gets his corn pone, and I’ll show you where he gets his opinion.
Ukraine is indeed a failed state.
The United States can not establish or build Ukraine independence. They must do that themselves. The Poles, Estonians, Lithuanians, and others who were under Soviet/Russia domination for many years clearly took steps to set themselves apart - culturally, linguistically, militarily
IMHO Ukranians did not do that - or at least, they are themselves greatly divided on it, which goes back to my initial point: the United States can not implement for them something they themselves are divided on.
Moreover, in that fragile state of nationhood, Obama and his ilk gambled big that a fragile Ukraine national identity could withstand a proxy civil war and conflict with Russia, and that Russia/Putin would not react. Obama and his Ukrainian allies lost badly on both counts. In that sense, the USA and Obama contributed greatly to breaking the place. Trump is badly advised if people are telling him he needs to continue to pursue those same policies
Let’s not promote war in a place that has already seen enough. I’m assuming you’re not a neocon warmonger
And make your case, assuming you’re not a McCain / Newland State Department troll.
