In a dramatic move Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell withdrew the nomination of President Donald Trumps pick for the Ninth Circuit, Ryan Bounds, after reports surfaced that his nomination didnt have enough votes for confirmation. Bounds, an assistant U.S. attorney in Oregon for the last eight years, was the Trump administrations first nominee to the Ninth Circuit, named in September to replace Judge Diarmuid OScannlain, for whom Bounds clerked. OScannlain took senior status at the end of 2016.
Both of Bounds home-state senators, Democrats Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, opposed his nomination. They withheld their blue slips for Bounds, in part, claiming he failed to disclose to their screening committee opinion pieces he wrote for a conservative student paper during his undergraduate studies at Stanford University.
In one article, Bounds railed against race-focused groups on college campuses, accusing them of fostering what he described as race-think. During his confirmation hearing, Bounds acknowledged the overheated and overbroad nature of his rhetoric, but defended his record of helping promote diversity within the profession. [snip]
One Republican senator, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, had indicated to colleagues earlier on Thursday he wouldnt be able to vote for Bounds, according to a Capitol Hill reporter. Citing Bounds racial remarks, Scott said he needed more time before voting to approve the pick.
This lack of spine from our stalwart GOP is a sure sign that Kavanaugh is DOA. As soon as Gloria Allred shows up, and she will show up, the GOP Flakes will gladly and readily cave.
Is Flake voting yes on any of these? I suppose that the democrats are voting no on all of them?
Disgusting isn’t it? This GOP make me wantta lose my lunch!
I’m done with em’. Let em get there $$ from someone other than me!!
“their”
Senator Tim Scott needs to be reminded that Segregation and the KKK were from the Democrats. This guy is not a Democrat and he has nothing to worry about.
January will be soon enough.
Tim Scott disappoints once again.
He's voted yes on all of Trump's judicial nominees so far.
I suppose that the democrats are voting no on all of them?
Not all; many (especially district court judges) have passed with substantial Democratic support. But the more controversial nominees got no Democratic votes, or only a few (Manchin, Heitkamp, Tester).
What does Ryan have to do with this?
There are 35 seats up in 2018, of which 26 are held by Democrats.
The main thing for the GOP is not to lose any of their nine.
Im nearly 60 and Ive never seen a GOP Majority thats as strong as a Rat minority. Never.
That is because progressive Republicans prefer Democrats to conservatives in their own party.
I freel you. I thought senator Sass was Gods gift. Ha! Hardly even a RINO. The senate as a whole is a big disappointment.
The main thing for the GOP is not to lose any of their nine.
I don’t see any chance for the AZ Senate seat staying GOP. Mormons will stay home or vote for the Democrat to flip the bird at POTUS.
Thank you.
“Democrats Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, opposed his nomination. They withheld their blue slips for Bounds,”
I forget, what article of the Constitution discusses “blue slips”?
More Senate corruption.
But Obama’s college writings, activities, financing, etc., were irrelevant and it was racist to ask about it.
The Republicans are like a dog chasing a car: Even when they win they have no idea how to drive.
What a bitter irony that judges, whose charge it is to be objective, need to prove how subjective they are about promoting racial diversity, in order to get confirmed.
In my youth no one other than agriculturalists or biologists used the word ‘diversity’ which is now just a fancy word used to disguise racial nose counting.
We got by on what was basically a merit system and were better off for it.
