Heres a pro tip: dont learn the law and the rules of armed self defense the hard way. A Lakeland, Florida gas station owner., Mehedeun Hasan, is in serious legal jeopardy after shooting a fleeing beer thief.
An owner of a convenience store in Lakeland has been charged with attempted murder after shooting at a man accused of stealing three cases of beer.
Polk County Sheriffs Office officials said Rennie Defoe, 43, of Plant City, walked out of the Shell gas station on Combee Road North with three 18-packs of Natural Ice Beer without paying Tuesday.
The stores owners, Mehedeun Hasan and his father Q M Monsur Rahman, followed Defoe out of the store to confront him, according to authorities.
While no store owner wants to see his hard-earned money walk out the door in the arms of a brazen thief, Defoe a multiple felon clearly presented no danger to either Hasan or Rahman. Yet both followed him out of the store where Hasan shot him as he drove away.
Officials said a bullet struck Defoe through his left arm and chest. As he fled the area he crashed his car at intersection of East Main Street and Fish Hatchery Road, deputies said.
Defoe is listed in critical condition at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center.
Hasan faces attempted second-degree murder charges and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
And all over three cases of Natty Ice. Heres hoping that Defoe recovers, if for no other reason than avoiding having Hasans charge upgraded to second degree murder.
“3 18 packs! “
Has shrinkage reduced a case of beer from four sixes to three?
The store owner may be a nut job..... You are probably correct He sounds like a Muslim.
IN Texas, deadly force can be used to prevent theft or malicious mischief AFTER DARK
Not according to the video I watched on Fox 13, Tampa last night.
Jury nullification needs to be used. If enough of that is implemented, maybe thugs will think twice before doing dumb things.
Was his life threatened? By a man holding beer and running away?
Willing to take a bullet for beer! Now there’s a drinking man!
In Texas the store owner would have been in the right.
Imho a bad shoot.
However...
Your honor, this Defoe person is a known felon. It appeared that he may have had a weapon. The only reason we shot was to protect the public, from our point of view, from a clear and present danger.
Good luck.

.
What????
Are we to just allow thieves to appropriate our property?
Makes no sense.
.
I think you’re a nut case!
.
As someone who knows nothing about firearm laws you are likely looking at this from an emotional perspective and not a legal one.
If and/or when you learn a little bit about how our laws work in this country you should come back so we can have an intelligent conversation about why the perp was wrong but his was a minor crime compared to the attempted murder charge facing the shooter.
Also, if you don't like our laws, there is a process to change them. Crazy huh!
I don’t care if he’s as Moslem as the Mufti, if I’m on his jury the storekeep walks.
He’s right, bro. You can only fire upon someone if you are in fear for your life.
Fake, but still funny.
Bump to your fantastic tagline!
The most serious felony in this case is drinking Natty Ice.
.
You arrogant moron!
At least you gave me a good laugh.
There is no basis for any Attempted murder charge.
It revolves around intent, which is absolutely missing here.
Shake in your boots little guy.
Oh great; you’re one of those tiny little boys who thinks he knows everything and can do no wrong.
Well bubba; you’re way off the reservation on this one. You’re not even in the same state anymore.
When the storekeep shot at the thief who was not threatening him; that was most definitely intent to harm. If you can’t see that; it’s your problem not mine.
I’m not justifying the theft. That was wrong and criminal but again; it was minor compared to the attempted murder (so far) committed by the storekeep. If the thief dies then the storekeep will be guilty of murder. What degree is for the prosecutor to decide. I think you’re confusing premeditated with intent. The storekeep definitely intended to shoot but how much premeditation went into that shooting? Again; that’s what the prosecutor will have to decide when charging him.
By the way; I can’t stand thieves and liars. To me they are right down there with rapists but the law is the law.
