At the close of the Trump-Putin meeting in Helsinki, Hodges told DW that Trumps attitude toward NATO is worrying, his attack on Angela Merkel was a terrible mistake and his friendship with Putin is inexplicable.
DW: What did you make of President Vladimir Putins meeting with his US counterpart Donald Trump in Helsinki? Do you share what seems to be the common view: that it was a diplomatic disaster that undermines multilateral alliances like NATO?
Hodges: Im reluctant to say anything is a disaster so immediately after it happened. Its just going to take a little bit of time for things to filter out. Certainly all the reports Ive seen would indicate that nobody was happy with it except the Russians. I think, on the plus side, at least there have been no announcements of something like: you can do what you want with Ukraine or Georgia. Theres no indication that this was like in the 18th century, when great powers traded away space to each other. I think theres a little bit of a sigh of relief that way.
I think its going to be a huge problem for Trump in the US, because so many Republicans have also come out with very strong criticism, that he didnt put a stake in the heart of this whole business about Russian meddling in the US election. He wouldnt condemn it; he didnt hold Putin accountable. I mean, its inexplicable.

President Trump has shown more American Strength than any time in the Obama administration.
Yep
“Russia only respects strength”
Which is why the EU doesn’t spend even 2% GDP on defense against this bogeyman?
I only respect strength too.
I most certainly do not respect liars.
Hired gun for EUroweenies.
That’s a general in need of a long vacation...
Hodges is bought and paid for. He’s talking to DW about Trump and not talking about the elephant in the room which is the pathetic state of the German military.
Strength is one thing, but righteous character is another.
Generals are political animals, he came up through the flag ranks under Obama, that should tell you everything you need to know.
No one in our government outside of Trump has righteous character either.
Nor does anyone in our media, except perhaps for Hannity.
The only thing that can bring down the USA, is treason from within. The same is true in the EU and Britain. The biggest threat is importation of the enemy army from the ranks of Islam, that is where Trump is concentrating his efforts, including calling out EU Oligarchs.
If he wasn’t a known, reliable, Trump-hating Euroweenie, there is no way leftist rag DW would have asked him for comment.
Germany has used the EU to destroy us on trade while NATO provided them the military security to get away with it, at our own expense. Those days are now over!
His analysis of the current Russian government, and Russia in general, is pathetically simplistic.
It is frightening to see people with his level of power who are so deeply stupid.
We certainly see domestic treason manifesting itself today. Hodges, although not on US soil, appears to be among them.
what ‘attack’ on Merkel? calling her out for in effect spending NATO money on Russian oil?
The truth is always an “attack” to the left, especially when it exposes breach of agreements.
like VOA, Hodges is just another swamp creature.
Voice of America: Speaking to MSNBC, Gen. Ben Hodges, who served as Commanding General of the United States Army in Europe, says Trump has left NATO allies angry and worrying about whether they can rely on the U.S.
