What if the bluest state in the country stole a third of a billion dollars from victims of chicanery and the media refused to notice?
I have been stunned at the lack of media coverage of California’s foiled robbery of almost a third of a billion dollars. That’s right: under Governor Jerry Brown, the Great State of California helped itself to hundreds of millions of dollars – money that was supposed to go to home owners, and you probably didn’t hear about it.
Bib Egelko of the San Francisco Chronicle was one of the few to cover this story, and it did not exactly generate nationwide headlines, for some reason:
When California received $410 million in 2012 as part of a nationwide settlement with major banks accused of abusive foreclosures, Gov. Jerry Brown used $331 million to pay state agencies in housing and other programs to cover their deficits.
Now a state appeals court has ordered the money be used for its original intent: to help homeowners who suffered foreclosures.
The money was “unlawfully diverted” from a settlement fund that was designated for programs directly assisting homeowners, the Third District Court of Appeal in Sacramento said Tuesday. A Sacramento County judge had reached the same conclusion but found he lacked authority to order the state to redirect the money, a finding the appeals court rejected.

Imagine for a moment if a Republican had stolen money intended to help people who lost their homes through chicanery, and diverted the stolen funds to his cronies in the government. Cue the video of weeping, homeless families.

The sad thing here, is that the $300-million will have to be paid out of the state treasury, and they might have to raise taxes against the public....to come up with the money. You can imagine people standing there and realizing that their taxes went up $400, but they will get a check for their money from the state, in six months.
LOL. Something doesn't smell right. Since when has any California judge claimed that he "lacked authority"? This has to be a first.
I thought California judges had authority over everything even authority over states that voted for Donald Trump, especially states that voted for Donald Trump …
What’s sad about it coming out of the state’s treasury, it shouldn’t have gone there in the first place. What about interest?
The simple fact of the matter is that if you are simply “part of the masses”, your protection is up to you, which is why I conceal carry. The government is primarily just an annoyance you have to deal with, like carpenter ants.
They don’t think you should be owning a house, and so they take as much of it as they can. Theft.
Inside every Democrat is a totalitarian screaming to get out.
Maybe! Only if SAC doesn't figure out another way to scam the funds.
I fail to see how concealed carry would help in this situation.
I think I see the problem beyond California's con game. The settlement was another example of the feds ie 'our' government shaking down an industry while claiming to be white knights. See also: tobacco.
Federal suits and private class action have the same dynamic: the lawyers get rich and everyone else gets a pittance.
The banks certainly didn't shrug and write off the figure. They raised fees, rates, etc. to recover it.
So, as usual, the consumer/taxpayer actually funded the massive sums in question.
Demoncraps = unlawful diversion of funds.
The sound of California’s economic implosion increases......
Moonbeam...don’t give a sheet..!!
It means I don’t trust the government to do anything for me, directly, even if it is the right thing to do.
Family court changes a man, even if it happened 20 years ago and he is completely reconciled to his children. It is a “teaching” moment regarding my relationship with the government.
The concealed carry is about trusting cops to protect you. You really are on your own.
Government debt enslaves the taxpaying citizens but not the non-taxpayers like Al Sharpton.
“The programs included housing counselors, foreclosure assistance hotlines, legal aid, consumer education and efforts to investigate and combat financial fraud.”
settlement money used solely to hire more unionized government workers, with not a single red cent paid out to those who were (supposedly) harmed ...
bkmk
California’s state government is corrupt.
I don’t know if it’s corrupt because it is a one party state or it’s a one party state because it’s corrupt.
Maybe it’s because it run by Democrats......
The money will NEVER be repaid.
Count on it.
In California everything winds up in the General Fund.
That’s where the Dems do their corrupt disbursements...
Example; For years gasoline taxes collected for road repair and construction was dumped into the General Fund where the bulk of it disappeared with no road work done.
Solution? Normal gasoline taxes still going into the General Fund. New (”temporary” Lololol)taxes imposed for gasoline and vehicle registrations/licenses.
The Dems here are stealing us blind right before our eyes.
A Tea Party is brewing! (that’s why they’re going after guns/ammo so hard in this state.
