French celebrations over the national football teams World Cup victory on Sunday quickly turned to violence, with street clashes, vandalism, attacks on police, and scenes of looting in cities across the country. As many as a million people had been enjoying the good-natured atmosphere at an event on the Champs-Élysées in Paris following Frances 4-2 win against Croatia, which ministers had hoped would bring a great moment of national unity.
But by 11 pm the jubilant mood had turned to chaos, with what local media describes as bands of thugs launching projectiles including bottles at police, who responded by firing tear gas while the area was evacuated.
Ordinary football fans fled the streets when violence first broke out earlier in the evening, with troublemakers even launching empty glass bottles at families with children, according to Le Figaro, which reported that scenes of vandalism and looting broke out including a kiosk set alight and the destruction of numerous cars.

welcome to Angela’s Europe ...
I've never understood the mindset: My team wins so let's go burn something.
—yep—IIRC, started in the late ‘70’s—
Animal spirits in control and on display.
Can you imagine the mayhem if the French team had lost?
... otherwise know as Merkel’s Debacle...
Was there in 98, none of this violence occurred.
Things have changed but for the worse as the massive immigration has led to distinctly separate societies.
Saw a movie on French soccer over the 20 years since 98 and there’s only growing issues with the influx and disjointed nature of belonging for millions.
It’s unfortunate because the party in 98 was one of the greatest in French history. People said it was the biggest party since World War II ended.
Nah son the same communities here in the US who do this are the same ones that do it in the other countries.
Does this mean the World Cup is over, or is it a ‘best of’ game series?
Hahaha. Enjoy your multicultural diversity.
Congo on the Seine.
This is not a European thing.
Looting, rampaging and pillaging seems to be the accepted norm now all over the Western “civilised” world.
It happens as a form of protest or celebration but it is happening with greater frequency.
Methinks the leniency and featherweight treatment criminals
and offenders get as a result of bad behavior is to blame.
If an offender were to get a year of hard labor at Sing-sing prison, we’d see this behavior diminish but I know this will not happen so...the mayhem will continue.
And steal some stuff too.
“...US fans behave likewise when their team wins.”
Very true.
Back in 2002 and 2003, the University of Minnesota (my alma mater) won back to back national championships in mens hockey. The area around campus was chock full of buttholes trashing cars, setting fire to dumpsters and throwing things at police.
It was ridiculous.
For the life of me, I will never understand sports fans’ rioting in celebration.
********
True! Because nothing like a victory to entitle someone to a new tv or shoes!
Yet both groups of rioters seem to have something in common.
This makes Philadelphia look like the Vatican.
Del Noce’s view of violence from http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/03/23/who-doesnt-read-books-in-america/:
Modern violence, the sort that became rife in the twentieth century, is not a natural violence. It is the outcome of the post-Christian context in which, for the first time, it was justified as creative violence, the necessary painful birth of the new world that had to be produced.
Celebrations are against the teachings of Islam unless they are celebrating a beheading.
